Shawn-Since you were in Hawaii, I'm sure some of the wood was koa, which I'm sure you know can be quite beautiful. I haven't done anything with it (yet). The longer I work with wood, the more I love walnut, and since my neighbor and son are local arborists, I've got a steady supply coming in. My drying area is filling up rapidly since they know what to look for now-believe me, I'm not complaining!
And Vern, I hear you on sawing off the corners of a square blank. I actually have a bandsaw. Sometimes I just like roughing a blank to round-for some reason I get a kick out of that more than almost any other turning task. (Yeah, I'm weird). There are many roads to sharp.

Here are pics of a shaving bowl I turned earlier this year out of a piece of Cherry Burl and sent to a fellow member in Austria. I think I'm going to let my hands rest and heal a bit and turn myself a shaving bowl out of the rest of that piece of Cherry Burl.

I made this one for a long handled shaving brush made from 6 pieces of Walnut.

Beautiful work, DB, especially that cherry burl-wow! I'll have to remember to score lines on the bottom for lather-making. What did you use to seal or water-proof it?
Incidentally, that walnut piece I started on yesterday turned out to be pretty wet under the wax at 26%. I'm now trying to dry it using the microwave method (very slowly). Hopefully it will come down to an acceptable level and then I can finish it.
Jerry, I'll bet that Woodcraft near you has a good selection of bowl blanks; the one here does. There are many roads to sharp.

I apply 4- 5 coats of Min Wax Polyurethane to seal/waterproof shaving bowls and brush handles.

Yes, they do Aaron. For a very pretty penny too.
I have to make larger pieces. I think it will be lower in cost and more special with the right woods combined. But I've not had any time to turn anything in for two weeks now.
And these coming days off the wife has another project for me to do. I'm hoping to get some wood glued up at least. I sure like that Walnut. I'm finding it is a great wood to turn. It's just Sharpening, right?
