The Walla Walla onions are out near the fence under the snow. Will they grow?

A friend brought over some tomatoes yesterday. A little early and I may have tomatoes before the snow melts.

He has a bet that he can grow a 10 ft tall tomato plant.........

My Walla Walla are under snow with more snow coming tomorrow.

There are tomato plants that grow on long vines. I grew some once. Good fruit but not very big.

My onions are strong and can only imagine a great crop this year, I have so much going on in my garden this year with all my time. I planted 2 more blueberry bushes to add to my others, love the output on our others.

My asparagus has doubled in size too. This year we are only planting 2 tomatoes plants, we couldn’t give enough away. All my beds have been juiced with compost and some mulch and are ready for spring. Cucumbers, lettuce, radishes, plus a bed set up just for peppers, jalapeños, and Cerrano,s.

Not edibles but my hostas are being divided and spread around the yard, will be a lot. My Iris bulbs have all popped up last month and looks like we,ll be seeing them for the first time. My yard is doing great with all the time I have with it, garden is feeding us a bunch.

Now trying to convince myself to take on a beehive, or some chickens, only time will tell

Whist some are frosted, we never seem to get any until late Feb. By then, Spring has pretty much sprung and is confused as hell.

Ground all leaves into the ground. lots of pecan and oak leaves. Do the rye front one year and the back the next.
Spread 12.5 pounds of Rye and let it take over. Aerates the soil. Weeds don't come in. Goes crazy!

Summer San Augustine comes in nicely. Nobody will believe me. As usual!
    A clean,green backyard is nice!

First and foremost, my thanks to Tim for starting the 2021 In the Garden Thread

For some reason, my WW sweet onion starts seem to have not made it and I don't know why. My only thought is that I didn't keep them watered enough.

Tc, if you are thinking about getting some chickens and your yard is fenced and gated they do a great job of keeping the lawn fertilized however they can raise hell with certain garden items. Chickens can only fly for very short distances but clipping their flight feathers would be a good idea.

Also if they are fairly young they will be giving you 'about' an egg a day. So unless you have friends to give the excess to don't get carried away with your 'flock'.

My granny always raised Rhode Island Reds as they were a decent layer and meat producer, if you aren't going to be wanting to butcher chickens then some White Leghorn are great egg producers.

I was given 7 older Banty chickens and as a family of 4 had more eggs than we could use. I asked my store manager if he'd like some really fresh eggs and he said sure so I brought him in a dozen. He opened the package and thanked me but asked if I wasn't worried about bloody eggs (Now remember this is a college educated man) and I said; "No, there aren't any roosters". And he asked what that had to do with anything------------------------

I said, Ok, your wife develops an egg about every month right? He said yea. and I replied; "So if you or some other male isn't around that egg won't get fertilized and start producing a baby right?" --------------Then the light came on and all he said was Ok, I get it. Name: no see smily.gif

Tom, I have been thinking about over seeding, from the pictures it sure looks good. I may be late for it but I am going to try this next year. We have Bermuda, brown all winter, I don’t have any weed problems, but I like the idea of the health benefits to my yard and the all year green.

How do you seed it? Do you just get out your broadcaster? Do you need to rake it down or cover with some compost? Any way great yard my friend

I can't imagine any kind of grass is going to stay green in my area. The wife and I took a walk the other day around the neighborhood and I did see green Fake Grass.
    It's just Sharpening, right?

I use a hand-held crank spreader. Sow it at the end of the year here after leaves have fallen. I grind them up into the yard. Have not raked in years. You have to put it out pretty heavy as one seed is one blade. Keeps the weeds at bay for the grass to come in in the Spring. Downside is if you get rain, it grows FAST! Not too bad mowing in the cold weather though.

Jerry the rye he’s talking about is a winter over grass,, over seeding for a green yard is common, I’ve been wanting to do it. It dies off when the warm season grasses come up.

So Tom all you do is broadcast it and not use dirt or compost to cover the seed?

Yeah, just put it out. Wait for rain. Sharpen the mower blade!
