    Default In the garden 2024

This year planted Monte Calme Yellow, Moldovan 456, and Habano2000 tobacco, okra, some carrots, jalapeños, mixed tomatoes but mostly roma and san marzano, 1015 onions, collard greens, cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, french breakfast, white icicle, and daikon radishes, romaine lettuce, two lemon and one lime tree, and two zucchini plants. Got a hyoooge radish crop, ran out of people to give them away to, pickled some, turned the rest back into compost. Got a half dozen nice cabbages so far and a half dozen still to be picked, Golden Acre variety. Fairly bug resistant. Snails and slugs get the outer leaves a bit, but the cabbage heads were untouched. Got about 5 lbs tomatoes so far, Already sick of collards. They get away from you. Nice lettuce harvest until they bolted but we had many a nice salad from them. Got about a dozen nice little carrots that were really sweet. Broccoli was underwhelming performer this year but if I had planted in January instead of Feb I probably would have had another bonanza from the Castle Dome variety. I will plant them again late in the summer for a nice fall harvest. Only picked a few peppers so far. I am letting them all turn red this year.

We went on a 5 day cruise and the biggest zucchinis were about 5" long. Got back today and had some real whales to pick. Amazing how fast they get hyoooge. As usual, I am glad I only planted two sets.

First plantings in Feb of tobacco and okra didn't do well. Ground was too cold. Both like the ground temp to be around 75F give or take 10, and I had to re-plant. They are looking this time, though, but I will be a little late getting the first pickings.

I need to start rolling cigars from my 2022 crop. I actually don't expect truly great cigars from that crop but they should be as good as most store-boughts. I am really looking forward to rolling last year's tobacco, especially the nice wrappers I managed to get.

As many of you know, I don't really 'Garden' I just like to play----------

So I had some Yukon Gold Potatoes from the store that had sprouted and instead of throwing them away I decided to cut them up and plant them. I fertilized and planted them out in front where they would get full sun.

Some of them didn't grow so I replanted and they are about a month behind. Here's what I got from the ones that did grow right away.

The big fella will make a few french fries! The little ones will cook up nice with a pot roast.
