For a cheap good pen to try out, it would be hard to go wrong with a Pelikano. IIRC, German school kids still use this. I picked up a handful in a grocery store when I was last there. James at Peartree pens would be a good person to buy from. He also has an ink sampler program, similar to Westcoast's blade samplers.
Sheesh, talk about similarities in these hobbies. Not too long ago, I just got back a couple of pens from nibmeisters - an Omas Paragon from John Mottishaw, and a vintage from Richard Binder.
And I have a razor coming from our honemeister, Lynn.

This is the pen I bought about a month ago. I whish this thread would have come up so I could have tried a Waterman or Pelican. I didnt know german pens and vintage pens were affordable. I thought they all were $100+.

No problem; the Retro 51 is a good value in a FP, and there is no reason not to have multiple pens...

Thanked: 0I really want a nice Pelikan, so I second everyone on that. I've been eyeing the m605 for a few weeks, that blue and silver looks amazing! Though they're out of stock everywhere I look. Does anyone know if they're still in production? The 405 would also be good.
Of course, I need to settle for something at least $100 cheaper, and probably won't be able to get a new pen for months now that I've emptied my "fun fund" (It was a German beer stein filled with quarters, I miss it already) on a startup razor setup. I did get some nice new inks (Noodler's in good colors) out of the fund, too, though, so that should hold me over.

Have you tried Pam Braun here? http://www.oscarbraunpens.com/
She isn't showing the 605 edition but her service and prices are excellent and she will know what the market situation is. Lots of other places to try and why not ask on FPN - link earlier in thread. Somebody is bound to want shot of one - sorry, Pelikan aversion showing through again! The 1000 is a cracker though, 800 a bit small and below that just not for me. Be a shame if we were all the same!
Nobody has mentioned the Pilot 78G yet. Great wee pen. I have it in a BB and it is great for italic style writing. Check the bay and you can usually pick one up new for about $15 - a really nice starter pen actually.

+1 on getting hooked up with Fountain Pen Network, they are the SRP for pens, and nice people. you can trust 'em when you hit their B/S/T for bargains, I've made good finds there. (props to tony miller for pointing me their direction)
I'm a Sheaffer man, myself, and carry them most of the time. Riding in my pocket today is a nice old chrome Imperial, c/c-fill. (I love the Shaeffer inlaid nibs, they are the best looking nibs apart from glass, I think) If I'm going somewhere a nice pen would be at risk, I'll pack a Javelin or even a cheap Preppy eyedropper-fill.

Boy this forum is costly. I didn't know I needed so many razors. I didn't know I liked fountain pens. I have my eye on the Bexley Posiden like the one Lynn describes. I should have picked up one at the ohio roundup but hadn't realized I was willing to pay that for a pen yet. I think the son of one of the owners was there dealing on some pens. I havn't seen his name on the bord for a while MitchBexley I think it was. I will have to do a search in a minute for him.
If I were to buy a good pen is R Binder a good value? Is the "tuning" he does a good thing? His price on the Bexley seemed fair. I really really like the pelicans though the M1000 is massive I need it.
