I agree with your conclusion, but I don't think there's any such thing as 18 yo Lagavulin and the 25 is very rare. Are you by any chance thinking of the 18 and 25 yo Macallans, which are widely available?
Don, if you find yourself enjoying the peat-smoked goodness of Lagavulin 16, you should also try Talisker 10 and Laphroaig Quarter Cask and Original Cask (don't be ashamed of adding a little water to the latter).

No 18? Well you could very well be right, its been close to a decade since I drank the stuff, I kinda gone off single malts or any straight spirit, I now find them to be rather sharp and they make me gag for some reason. Actually in this past year I find myself not being able to handle alcohol as much. (sigh)
On the other hand if 25 is very rare I should definitely see about buying a bottle, seen one last year for around $150. Just gotta keep the wife from finding out.

There might not be standard bottlings of those ages.
These are probably harder to get in the states, but independent bottlers like Gordon and McPhail, Cadenheads, ... bottle whiskies outside of the normal ages, so 18 year old Lagavulin probably exist, or existed at some point in time.Til shade is gone, til water is gone, Into the shadow with teeth bared, screaming defiance with the last breath.

You're right that there might have been an 18 year old Lagavulin sold by one of the independent bottlers (though I'm not aware of any). I was pointing out that there's no such thing as (a distillery bottle) of Lagavulin 18 to save Don and other members from going on a wild goose chase based on OLD_SCHOOL's strong recommendation.
