I've had Kwak a couple of time. I honestly don't remember what I thought of it, but I must've liked it as I have no mental red flag at the mention of Kwak!

My wife and I tried Kwak when we went to Belgoes a few years ago. Belgoes is a chain of Belgian restaurants that served a couple of hundred different beers and the gimmick was that all the waiters were dressed in monk's clothes (or habits, whatever they're called).

The reason I remember so well is because when we ordered the Kwak, we had to take one shoe off and hand it over to our monk until the end of our meal. It was kind of discomforting to eat a meal with only one shoe.

They explained it was an old Belgian custom, but the cynic in me figured it was because they got sick of customers stealing the Kwak glass and wooden stand!

    Maybe Bruno can confirm?

Hehhe, I think, not sure, that your right.....just a way of stopping the glass and stand from getting lost.

But, if I am wrong, I am sorry.

Anyway, I did like the kwak....with or with out shoe

Kwak is indeed good stuff. There's a bar here in Chicago (The Hop Leaf) that serves it in the official glass complete with wooden holder. Great beer. Great bar!

Because my girlfriend is a blues singer who gets tours over there, I get to Belgium usually once a year. I like Kwak and the burping glass is a hoot. But there are much better Belgian beers. The trappists are usually the best but you can't find them in the States. The Belgian beer I like best that I can find here is Grimbergen Double Ale.

That's one Belgian custom I've never heard of
The cynic in me tells me that your guess is probably correct.
The glasses are popular, and probably cost a lot in the US.

The Belgian Ales are spectacular. I tried Kwak in 1989 right after graduation while in Belgium on a trip through Northern Europe. Haven't had Kwak in a long time but I still have my glass and stand (that I bought - didn't have to run around with only one shoe )
Fun times...Fun times...Damn that was a long time ago.

the Belgian Beer Bar over here does the same thing.

Kwak is all right. It's a little too bland for my tastes, though- If I'm looking for a Belgian, I'd go for one of the Orval beers, or a Leffe. Or maybe a Delerium Tremens... and I go on.
