Kilts!

The BBC iplayer isnt available to foreign countries because only the UK and Ireland pay licence fees for the television and it is that licence fee which funds the BBC. Why would Joe public UK pay for something when Joe public french could see it that evening for free? I highly doubt that the BBC will give you permission to use it Spike, regardless of the reason. They suck like that.

Of course some people find illegal ways to rip video from streaming source. But I dont recommend that BECAUSE its illegal. And I dont know how either. :shrug:

A few years back my wife bought me a mountain hardwear hiking kilt, very comfortable and definitely nice on a hot day. When she purchased it, it wasn't unisex it was for men, they later changed that??

My new UnionKilt arrived this morning. I unpacked it & put it on. I do not think it will be coming off anytime soon:w It is one of their black corduroy numbers, which unfortunately they have stopped making:cry: It is very comfortable & has fab pockets (always important as I carry loads of crap) Only one gripe; now I want a proper woollen cilt. Oh & a leather one & a utilikilt &......

Clan MacGregor here. When I was in the Army, I had both Highland day wear and evening wear, appropriate sporrans, etc. Kilts are great and I miss being able to wear one now (you need HOW much tartan???)...but they are comfortable and I never found the wool to be hot. I even wore mine while traveling around Scotland in the 80's and never had a problem. In Edinburgh, I saw businessmen in kilts...I was in a kilt, shirt, casual kilt jacket...no one gave me a second look. In the Highlands and on Skye, I was even greeted with what seemed to be even greater hospitality than normal (Scots are amazing hosts). As for the ethnic qualification to wear a tartan, that is long past. Weavers in Edinburgh now even have "national" tartans for folks from countries that may not have kilts. They even made a tartan to commemorate the US Bi-centennial in 1976...it was a blue field with a red and white set. My claim is through my step-father who, for all intents and purposes, was my father, and through his mother, surnamed "Gregg". When I would go to highland games I would hang out with the MacGregors and there was no question as to my being allowed to wear the tartan....but as has been said here, no one really seems to make much out of it anymore.

A funny anecdote: I was on Skye and was looking at the scenery and two locals came up and asked me in a rather agressive tone if I was wearing Frazier tartan...I said "No, it's MacGregor" and they apologized and backed away.

As for wearing them everyday...if only! I can't think of a better garment!

my understanding is that the irish did not traditionally wear kilts correct? some sort of toga type thing instead? I have a bit of irish in the blood and threaten the ladies that when it is hot in the summer I'm going to wear a kilt since they get their skirts, but sinc ethe irish didn't really wear them......

I have read this thread with great interest and I am sorry for bringing it up again. But seeing as it is well rated I dont think too many would mind.

I would like to add my two cents and fix some serious misconceptions about the kilt.

1) You have to have Scottish heritage/blood to wear the kilt; This statement is totally wrong and false first of all the scots are NOT a race of people. They are not defined as a race of people through anthropology, european statute or british and scots law. The scots are racially northern european caucasian. They are seperated like all northern european nations by community, culture and nationality not race. This definition includes irish, english etc.

There is very little differance between is genetically. The scots are not defined by blood they are defined as a culture and a people, if your ancestors were scots you dont have scottish blood you could argue you have northern european caucasian blood.

I have witnessed americans and canadians say that you have to have scots blood, this is nonsense canadians and americans with scottish ancestors are not scottish, that does not make them scottish and they have no more rights over the kilt than anyone else. The kilt should be worn by everyone and anyone who wants to wear it regardless of culture, race or nationality.

2) The celts wore kilts, This is complete nonsence and I dont know hwo this keeps getting around. The celts NEVER wore kilts and the kilt is NOT celtic form of dress. The celts were widely documented and ONLY documented as wearing trousers and sometimes with a cloak.

The kilts was developed in the scottish highlands in the 16th century by the scottish gaels. The irish, welsh, cornish etc. etc. never wore kilts though they are welcome to now.

3) An englishman called Thomas rawlson develoepd the short kilt, The short kilt was developed by the scots regiments of the british army (Black watch) in order to attract highlanders to join their ranks and police the highlands. The thomas rawlson argument was debunked as hearsay from a letter he wrote their is no factual evidence he developed the short kilt.

5) Clans have their own tartan, This was devloped after the clan system had died by the victorian romantic ideals of scotland that was influenced by the writings of walter scot.

Previously clans wore what ever tartan was available from their weavers. Some clans may have went to the same weaver and thus had the same tartan.

I though I would just clear that up :D

I am an LLB Law student at Edinburgh University as part of my dissertation I had to research definitions of race, ethnicity. I am currently writing my dissertation on employment law. My lecturer told me how the scots and other european nationalities fitted into the discrimination act and he verified that they are not a race of people they are a sub group from the northern european caucus ethnic group. An anthropology lecturer at edinburgh explained this to me in further detail. But on the whole It only takes common sense to realise that a group of people united in culture, community and nationality are not a racial group.

saying the scots, irish and english are differant races is like saying that the arabs from saudi arabia, oman, and the UAE are differant races, they are not they are just differant states and cultures.

As you are scottish you will no doubt be familiar of the vast cross migrations that have taking place in all european nations that past 1000 years. You will also be aware that the scots are made of of many groups and communities that include irish, anglo, saxon, scandanvian, iberian, etc etc. these groups are not races but merely groups and communities. so to say that you have 'scottish blood because your great - great - greta granny was scottish is mute. there is no such ting as scottish blood because the scots are not a race.

I have read so many sources on the celts that I cannot pinpoint any particular source a lot of my readings have come from books and conversations with students studying history and celtic culture at uni. But I can assure you that there is NO evidence whatso ever that the celts wore kilts. This is just a huge misconception. I would point you to read any books on the celts or on roman historical documents on the celts t(that verified what they really wore etc.). Glasgow univerity itself has original documents on the subject. However because the celts never wore kilts, this has never even been a subject that celtic historians would ever bring up so it is that complete lack of source, evidence and facts that verify my argument.

For a source on the history of kilt well I could point you to mathew n.c newsome from the tartans museum in the US who is a verified expert on the history of the kilt. you can type his name and it will appear with many of hiw writings on the subject. But being scottish you relaly wouldnt need to cite this source as I am sure you are aware of the kilt history in scotland.

Utilikilts is still in business, they just rarely have much in stock since its bought as fast as its produced. If you would like a utilikilt you can call them and order what you like and they will put it in the que and you should get one in around 6 to 8 weeks. We call it the jonesing period. :)

Well, I'll go ahead and bring this back up since I occasionally wear a kilt. I have one SWK kilt (Irish National tartan) and a couple non-traditional kilts that I made myself. I don't wear the non-trads anymore, though, because fortunately I've lost enough weight that they don't fit. Good to see other kiltwearers at SRP. Being a forum fan, I hang out at two kilt forums: BOTK and the previously mentioned XMarks.

I've got a few kilts myself, and now that the weather is hot again I find myself wearing them pretty much exclusively outside of work. I've got two Utilikilts and one Bilt Kilt in MacGregor Modern tartan (Lochcarron 13oz worsted).

My only problem is I absolutely loathe wearing pants/kilt/whatever at my waist, so I had my Bilt Kilt made so that I can wear it at jeans level and the bottom will just hit the top of my knees. Oddly enough the woolen Bilt Kilt is cooler than the cotton Utilikilts. I think if it weren't quite so brightly colored and suspiciously resembling a Christmas tablecloth I would probably wear it all the time.

I am a bagpiper so I am constantly wearing a kilt but there IS a way to ride it on the bike. When you sit down you simply tuck the front end completely under you so that you are sitting on it and move the sporran to one side. I have the bagpipes strapped to the back of my Harley Night Train and I am off (loud pipes on a Harley...get it? :rock: ). The long piper's sporran holds it down on one side, the piper's supply pouch holds it down in the back (the weight of my .380 pistol there helps) and the dirk (sword) holds it down on the other side.

I guess it 's just a garment - a confortable one - and the Utilikilts site makes you want one and stress out the fact that the sheer existence of the male genitalia and it's very peculiar phisionomy legitimate the kilt. Hey... I want one! But I am Portuguese... sure there were Celts in Portugal. Before the Romans... and after the romans Celtic heritage vanished. So... I guess I wouldn't feel culturaly confortable in a kilt... because I am not a Scott or from Celtic ancestry.

No need to be Scots/Irish/Welsh to wear a kilt. If you are interested in wearing a tartan, the Scots have created "National" tartans for most nations. The Celtic nations as a whole are welcoming and are proud to share their culture. Here is an interesting site on Scottish-Italian heritage:

I have 2 tartans. The one I nearly always wear is the Irish National Tartan because it has all of the colors of our Florida Sheriff's Office and no more. I also have a Black Watch kilt because I played occasionally with the Florida Police Pipes and Drums.

So if you really want to wear a 'legitimate' earned kilt, join a bagpipe band (we need more members :medvl: )

Utilikilts are solid color and universal. Go ahead and wear one. I piped for a funeral at sea 6 miles offshore on a large 54' sail boat off Key West a couple of years ago at sunset and everyone (except me as I was in a regulation kilt) was wearing one. It stormed badly after we got out there that I had to lean my back heavy to the forward mast to be able to play. On the way in at dark and the stunning imagery of kilted Viking warriors in the wind and lightening practically made me pee my own kilt it was so scary looking! (not a boat you wanted to meet at the dock on a dark stormy night as all, including me, were armed with dirks).

As far as the 'duck tape' answer to my riding while on a Harley post ... I know this is a Straight Razor forum but my shaving is limited to the face so I immediately started thinking of the pain of tape removal ....
