Oh...no need to start that discussion... :gl:

sorry, just pretty stoked right now that I found somewhere where people wouldn't make rude comments at me when I said I wore kilt occasionally,
I usually wear a Taylor(my clan) modern dress tartan. however, I've been looking at getting one in dark watch because apparently, according to my grandmother her whole family is entitled to wear it for some reason or another.
I don't really car about the weather when I wear it, I look more at the company I'm in, I think I've worn it twice now because the people around here spent most of their time trying to lift it up last time (the guys, not the girls, don't know why either)
The response I give when someone (particularly a lady) asks what under it is: For a dollar I'll tell you, for five I'll show you, and for ten you can find out for yourself.
Gotta wonder about the guys you're hanging out with if they're trying to lift your kilt. :ziplip: I get stares all the time when wearing mine, but no one teases me or makes rude comments. At least not to my face.
Anyway, the Blackwatch (there is no dark watch) tartan is a fantastic tartan. And it's a universal tartan, so anyone can wear it without worry of clan or family ties. And there could be a whole discussion of who can wear which tartan and the thoughts behind it.
To an attractive woman, in your thickest Scotish brogue: "I'm a man of few words, gi me yer hand."
:roflmao I just realize what I'm missing with my point of view.
My Bilt Kilt in 13oz Lochcarron wool in MacGregor Modern plaid. No sporran needed since this thing has cargo pockets. Very cool even at the 100+ temps we've been putting up with here in Houston. The Bilt Kilt guys are very nice and will do all sorts of customization work. They're owned by Burnetts & Struth, a large kiltmaker in Canada that I believe does the kilts for the Canadian highland regiments.
hey - what are the odds!
I just bought a kilt, and logged on here and saw this. cool!
(I got a sports kilt with 'the works')
Sorry to get back to you so long on this. I can't log into this site where I work any more and as a result I totally forgot to check on this thread.
To answer your question, herritage is not a must for wearing a kilt. Heritage has gotten many men into kilts to start with (like me) but it is by no means a requirement. In fact there was not such thing as "family tartans" until the early 19th century. IF you did choose to wear a clan tartan, as long as you show respect for the clan, most members would be flattered that you would choose to wear it. THe truth is there is no such thing as entitlement.
The only tartan that I would suggest staying away from is the Balmoral as while not "illegal" it would be in poor taste as it is reserved for the British Royal family. They can grant permission to wear it. Any reputable kilt maker wouldn't even consider making a kilt with out permission.
If you like so many of us find the comfort and practicality of a kilt to your liking then all I can say is "Welcome to the kilted rabble!!!"
I've been addicted to kilts for years. I've made two "Tanks", but my favorite is my Utilikilt Mocker. Sooo comfortable!
Cheers,
Rick
Great for fornication and diaohrea !!
Reviewing this thread again has made me want to get a proper dress kilt.
I again proudly present MacDonald of Clanranald. This one's prettier than the last I think.

I wear A Clan Campbell tartan. I first wore a kilt at a friends wedding. Since then I love wearing them and it makes me proud to be of Scot-Irish decent.
Y'are a dog then. Worse!
;)
Hey much love for ya. I don't think we harbor any bad feelings:mace: considering the dates and times of that .......event. Thanks for the history lesson, seriously. Where did you get your kilt from? Right now I have a kilt from the folks at Sport Kilt. It's a very inexpensive way to get one, but I want something more heavy duty.
Dear Kilters,
This is my very first time to enter in on a forum of any kind so please bear with me if I break protocol. I just want y'all to know how much Russ (oops am I supposed to say real names?) enjoys this forum and how much help and fun he has had with this group.
He is having a lot of fun with his straight razors and all the accesories as well. His shelf turned out real nice and I llike looking at it, especially since we don't get much time together, seeing it reminds me of him. (I'm stuck on nights and he is days)
All of that to say: kilts, kilts, kilts, I love, love, love them, pictures, pictures, pictures, where are they? Russ has one that he bought at Scarbough Faire Ren. fest, it is made of heavy cotton almost a canvas I believe the tatrtan is Black Watch. I would like for him to have a real one (wool) of the Russell tartan which is his mothers name but money and practicality seem to get in the way. Gee go figure that huh?
Well I better go, thank you for the chat, hope I didn't step on any toes or "nick one's cheek" keep shaving and and show off those legs!

Debra (oops the name thing again)
Hey all,
Saw the topic on the hotlist and sort of laughed. Im from Canada but I have some strong roots in Scotland. My Dad is a Stewart and my Mum is a Scott.
I wore my kilt to our campus pub last night. Yeah, it was cold and all, but there really isn't anything more beautiful TO ME than my kilt. Snapped a few pictures of my Kilt (Stewart Mod Black) and my Grandfather Scott's old straight that he gave me last week :). Keeping traditions alive!Attachment 38534

i have a kilt(black watch) and wear it for going to festivals and even hitting the stage.
i just love the freedom you have in it
Old67, that's a great pairing...kilt and straight razor. I'm also a kilt wearer, so thanks everyone for this great thread.
Where would I look to purchase my first kilt. Mostly for price. If I like it I'll get a better one.
I wear my family's Clan MacNab tartan whenever I get the chance, usually about 3 or 4 times a year. And I've found that giving presentations while kilted is a great way to make sure people stay interested.
I'm not going to repeat myself. I'm Welsh. We don't have a "K" in Welsh, so Welshmen wear cilts
I made this last month.

I've made three others and have just ordered the material or three more. All hand sewn.
Everyone is telling me to start taking orders.

Well I don't have any kilts (the wife does though) but I did consider being fitted for one the last time I was on the Royal Mile ata shop we passed there but I ran out of time.
Historically Scots wore pants. It was only the highland Gaels that were kilted, but Scots seemed to have adopted the kilt well enough. The Irish now too. In fact, all the Celtic nations including the Welsh have taken to kilting. Norse, Cornish, Germans, Bretons, Gallicians all have tartans to wear which represent them. There's even an Italian American tartan.
Do you wear jeans? Historically only Californians wore jeans you know. Everybody else seems fine with that though.
The only reason you need to wear a kilt is that you want to. It's warm in winter, cool in summer and more comfortable than pants. You decide to do what you are comfortable doing.
I had a bit of a chuckle at your post...Not you mind...Just the post.
I'm half Welsh and damn proud of it, and if the Welsh of centuries past could be proven to have been K(C)ilted, then I would embrace kilts as part of my heritage and would stride proudly down any street of any city or town you chose.
Jeans have relatively few years of history in comparison to the history I'm talking about. To answer your question though, yes, I wear jeans in winter and shorts in summer...It's summer here now.
I know the Welsh/Irish have taken to Kilting, there's even a Kilt that's been invented in my family name. That's the thing though, it has only been since sometime after 2002, that this little part of my family history has had it's own tartan.
When the Scots were running around the highlands wearing their Kilts, no one would have dared approach them to point and laugh at their 'Dresses", because the buggers had dirty great big swords, a dagger on their belts and an occassional sneak knife strapped to their leg and a fair degree of enthusiasm in using them...Now if I could also wear a dirty great big sword and get away with using it, if necessary, to backup my point, Kilt wearing would be alive and strong in this country, I'm sure. We have great skirt weather here, afterall.
In closing, I think Homer Simpson said it best..."I can't wear a pink shirt to work. Everybody wears white shirts. I'm not popular enough to be different."
So it isn't that I don't want to, it's just that I won't be able to get away with it.
Mick
Kilts are a bit like Speedos, a few guys look good in them, but most don't.
Now that just sent the shivers of horror down my spine. I've seen me in speedo's and I just don't have the speedo build...I replaced my six-pack with a keg some years back now... :)
You live yn Gymru Myrddyn? How many Cymro do you see in Cilts roughly?
Mick
I love my kilts. I have two. My Buchanan plaid is for the uniform for the bagpipe band--see my picture at left. My family plaid is "Baillie of Lamington"
