fellas! who wears kilts and what kinds?
I myself wear kilts pretty much exclusively unless I'm at work because they won't let me :(
1. traditional Scottish kilt in my family tartan (MacEwan) made of heavy wool. not fun on a hot day.
2. black canvas Utilikilt, carpenter model. very useful, not as stylish, has odd symmetrical pleats.
3. homemade summer kilt made of lightweight cotton in Marpat. no pockets, very light, wonderful for Texas summers.
I'm English with some Irish ancestry so I have an Irish tartan somewhere but I don't wear it. I married a Scots woman who's father was a Highlander and part of the Farquharson clan - he welcomed me into the family and invited me to wear the family tartan.
So I've a medium weight kilt in the Farquharson Modern tartan, and I've also got an Olive Survival Utilikilt.

I have a great Kilt that I wore for my wedding. very comfortable but dont think I could do it everyday.
So I was reading up on kilts in both this thread and some info from that corsets thread and it has sparked my interest. I think I want a utilikilt. lol
Sounds funny to say, but it seriously sounds like some great freedom. Who wears them often? Anyone besides Jockeys? I remember at the MA get-together Gustav had one on but I didn't really inquire. lol. Are they really that comfortable and functional? What kind of looks do you get from people? Any other info that is a kilt FAQ must?
I know Simon wears his quite a bit
I wish I had the "b*lls" to wear mine more often. Surprisingly in Scotland one can get a lot of flack for wearing a kilt - especially if it isn't a traditional tartan one.
I have a strong urge to wear mine to work tomorrow

1. yes. once you wear one, you'll never want to put pants on again.
2. all kinds of looks, plus all sorts of comments ranging from: "are you gay?" to "that kilt is sexy" (totally serious, Scout's Honor!)
3. if you choose to go "au natural" beneath the kilt, don't call it "commando". in proper terms, it is "regimental" :roflmao
4. kilts are not for those who are not secure in their masculinity, especially on windy days when you are going regimental.
5. if some smartass asks what is worn under the kilt, an appropriate response is "well, it's definitely seen a lot of action, but it's not WORN... still in perfect working order"
6. many kilts don't have pockets, so be prepared to carry a purse. (or sporran if you wanna be traditional) see number 4.
I have a few, although my tartans don't get worn much during the late spring/summer (they could since I've moved north, but it's habit at this point). My everyday kilts are utilikilts (originals) but I've been eyeing the survivor utilikilt. (I looked at the mocker, but I'm pretty sure that wouldn't fly at the office).
I wear Mactavish Dress (sometimes called Thompson Blue) on any occasion I can. I find that the only problem with wearing a kilt is that I tend to feel like I want to drink a ton! It makes me feel like I can throw a car over a building for some reason. LOL.
My favorite response to the question "what are you wearing under there?" depends on who's asking and how they ask. If it is the smartass that jockeys mentioned above (and more often than not it is) I like this response (to be uttered with eye contact and a grin):
"Your mother's lipstick."
If it is a pretty girl, I like this one:
"A blue ribbon for first prize."
I got mine for my 21st birthday. Its the family clan tartan (Ogilvie). I wore it for my wedding, for my best friends wedding (when I was best man), for two other weddings recently and I have another wedding in August to go to. Aside from that i've worn it for alot of ceilidhs (spell that right now folks) and it is ALWAYS a big hit with the ladies. Apparently they are super sexy and if it takes a few insecure neds asking if i'm gay to get that kinda attention from the ladies then game on! :tu
well as I said in the corset thread I have made it a bit of a collection thing, now I have six of the buggers...lol.
1 Leather
1 denim
1 Utilikilt bought at grandfather mountain highland games
1 3 piece kilt suit
1 Weathered Johnstone ( my clan)
1 Modern Johnston
the utilikilt is what Im wearing in some shots at the recent gathering and you will also see me in my denim one in some.
As regards sexy....well across here in the USA it seems to be just that with the women...of course having an accent to back it up always is a winner... and as me good mate sicboater said...when asked what your wearing under it...his responses were spot on and extremely original I think...you vary it with company..but as an ice-breaker, it works wonders.the kilts are here
Finally, something I feel qualified to comment on!
I wear kilts exclusively unless I'm riding my scooter - the aerodynamics of kilts and scooters just don't mix.
I've got four kilts from Utilikilts of Seattle - one Original, one Survival, and two Mockers. I started wearing them as a joke to get the goat of a bride whose wedding I was going to be in, but since then I've decided that there's really no good reason to wear pants. Kilts are more comfortable, they're very practical, and they tend to be conversation starters (although the more comfortable I've gotten in my kilts, the less people seem to ask me about them.)
You definitely get questions about them, and they're definitely sexy. A few months back, some friends and I went to a local biker hangout to shoot pictures of the motorcycles. While we were doing that, one big, burly guy in a Harley leather vest gave me the mal ojo and asked what the hell I was wearing. Before I could deliver any of my pre-selected witty comebacks, his girlfriend said "It's a kilt! I think it's real sexy." And that pretty much set the tone for the rest of the conversation.
My girlfriend, the esteemed LilithParker, gets very depressed if I wear pants now.
Wearing kilts definitely makes you more considerate of what women go through on a daily basis - you will not look at a ladder, catwalk, or floating stairs the same again. And you discover that sitting on a bench or a seat in what is basically a wrap skirt is not as intuitive as you might at first think. It takes a little manuvering to pull it off withouth exposing more than might be considered appropriate and still cover your butt.
I even managed to convince my uncle that kilts were a good idea - there's a picture of us both here. (I'm the one on the left.)
Clan Cameron. I'm lusting after a weathered Clan Cameron Great Kilt.
The leather utilikilt is priced at $666 :roflmao
A little off topic but is anyone familiar with the Celtic rock group Cyote Run? Their music is fantastic and they perform all their concerts in kilts. (Except the drummer, the only lady in th group. She wears pants. Go figure.) Seriously, I highly recommend them.:y
Utilikilts are variations on the wee kilt.
This, in cilt form, on international days, especially against the English

The Utilikilts look good & very comfortable. Silver likes the thought of the leather one & so do I http://smileys.on-my-web.com/reposit...tanic-0052.gif
My apologies. I stand corrected.
But the fact still remains it made my eyes goggle.
EDIT: For anyone else who wants to know more:

I've got three. A utilikilt (bought at the store because I live about 20 miles from downtown seattle) a US Army Tartan kilt and a Black Stewart Sport kilt.
Plus, I've corrupted my 15-year-old with a utilikilt.
gotta love the feel on the calves.
Weathered Buchanan is my chosen tartan - Watt ancestry etc. but that's all victorian english nonsense anyway. Wear whatever you like and enjoy! I have a cracking big dirk that I wear out sometimes - cut our wedding cake with it (dirk is small sword as opposed to the skian dubh which everybody wears in their sock). Got to watch you don't get arrested but the amount of ladies who want to come alongside and touch my big dirk is impressive and gratifying. The kilt abroad is much more fun that at home. I remember a party near Amsterdam - like a magnet the thing was...
Found another kilt supplier in Wales!!! Not sure how they measure up to Utilikilts. They're certainly a lot cheaper & the leather with dragon embroidery.... Hmmmmm :D
Welcome to UnionKilts
3 out of 4 of these guys can pull off the kilt...
The blonde one... My first impression was man that's one ugly woman.

If they weren't so damned expensive I'd have one. MacDonald of Clanranald is mine.

I could only wear it for dress occasions ... doesn't go with the cape. :D

If I was at all interested in wearing kilts, this picture would completely turn me off of them! Not a one of them look comfortable or natural in their kilts!
On the other hand, if Makars picture was used to advertise kilts, I might buy one as he looks so at home in a kilt!
IMHO Makar looks a bit..... well..... pervy in that picture.
Sorry Stephen  :(
FWIW here's a pic of me and my bro wearing our kilts. I'm on the left, and I cant help but pose when i'm wearing a kilt. But do I look better than the 4 men posing in that other pic? You decide....

You both look rather at home, but you don't look anything like Johnny Depp!
