Default A Tribute to The Music of a Lost Friend

You all know we lost Coleman Mellett when Continental 3407 crashed two weeks ago. Fortunately, we have many recordings of him sharing his tremendous talent. Of course he was married to singer Jeanie Bryson. You can check out her music at her website www.jeaniebryson.com and Coley is on much of that, especially her latest album, Deja Blue. But Coleman helped Jeanie with a more recent project where she sang a selection of some of her father's music (Dizzy Gillespie). Here's a video about that:

Of course Coley was Chuck Mangione's guitarist and was on his way to a gig when the plane went down. Also lost was Chuck's flautist and woodwind player, Gerry Niewood. I met Gerry's wife and daughter Tuesday evening. Check out the list of records Gerry played on:

Here is a recording of Jeanie singing, Coleman on guitar and Gerry on flute:

I managed to snag some video at the Blue Note in NYC. The picture is pretty much useless but the sound quality is surprisingly good. Too bad I kept getting yelled at to stop recording. Anyway, here's a live recording of solos by Chuuck (Flugelhorn), Gerry (flute) and Coley (Gutar):

Tuesday I attended a memorial gathering at which people spoke, played and sang. I felt very honored when I was introduced to Natasha Roth Elekea and her husband James who flew in from Germany just for this get together. They returned to Europe Wednesday. Coleman went on tour with them performing Nattie's original music. Check out her hauntingly beautiful voice:

Here she sings a cover of the standard, There Will Never Be Another You:

I know I wrote alot of sad stuff immediately after the crash. My grief was very raw and I can understand if you were rolling your eyes. Now is time to stop being sad. It is time to celebrate these great talents. I hope you enjoy these selections.

    Thanks,

    Brad
