I was an officer with the First Nebraska Infantry, while reenacting for about 10 years, I taught myself rudimentary blacksmithing, leatherworking and made my own uniforms.
Worked as an extra in "Dances with Wolves" and "Glory.
"
Served in the artillery and cavalry as well and made a complete 1858 McClellan saddle after months of research.
I almost, but for the lack of a hone and even bigger lack of knowledge, learned to shave with a straight.
I never did SCA, but I did teach myself tablet weaving.

Thanked: 884I was into "buck skinning" for about 10 years. We all started out pre-1830 "fur trade era". After a few years, the general shift was to pre-1840, (with some grumbling from us old timers ) and then the bunch went pre-1850 ( With a LOT of grumbling from us "hardcore old MF's). I lost it one afternoon when a clown in a store bought rig, wearing a wrist watch, and smoking a filter cigarette told me the beads on my war shirt were TOO BIG and that it should have seed beads on it. Seed beads were pretty much reservation era. Anyway half the camp heard me tell him what I thought of him and I packed up. Sold all of my gear except my shootin' iron.
Later on, one of the old bunch said they had a "cowboy era" gig going on. STRICTLY pre-1890. I was in on that for while. It was great fun.
Don't do any of it anymore. It was FUN while it lasted.

Thanked: 4Well, it's not reenacting but I do compete in cowboy action shooting which is like reenacting. We dress up in pre-1900 garb shooting period or reproduction guns and it's really fun. I've taken a few people out with me and they all want to go back. If you're interested look up the Single Action Shooting Society. They are the Governing body of it and can help you find a club close to you, if you live where guns are allowed.
