A trip to the liquor store
I just got back from the liquor store. Having finished my bottle of Old Pulteney last night, I was out of whisky. I went over to my regular place, which has a nice selection and happens to be quite close by.
I was browsing the Irish and Scottish section and I was having a bit of trouble deciding. I've been on a Scotch kick recently (last three bottles), and I've really been enjoying them. But, when I visited my brother last weekend, he shared his twelve year Jamey with me, and that was quite nice too. After staring at the shelves for a few minutes, a little orange sign (discount) caught my eye. Bushmills Black was marked down. I'd heard a bit about it and it's been on my list to try; the discount sealed the deal.
I brought her home and was too tempted to have a taste to put her away. I poured out just a little bit (neat; there wasn't enough it my glass to risk adding water) and sat down to enjoy. I have to say, this stuff is really good. I'm no expert, so I won't attempt anything like a serious review. What I will say is this. It's a bit sharper initially, but still a bit complex, and it has a rather long and mellow finish with what tastes to me like toffee and coffee. I really like it.

Thanked: 234Funny, I picked up a bottle of Jameson because it was discounted on friday. I'm quite liking the lightness from the tripple distilation. You don't see many triple distilled whiskies any more. I think only one scotch is tripple distiled.
Glad you're enjoying it, nothing comes close to a good whisky.

I find the regular Jameson a bit harsh, but I quite like it on ice. A great go-to beverage. I hope you enjoy yours too.

Thanked: 234Agreed, I generally drink blended and harsher whisky on ice, I like the sweetness it brings out. I can't remember the last time I drank whisky neat, usually with a dab of water.
I have a friend who goes to Scotland and collects spring water in bottles and brings it back down here, it probably makes no difference, but it's a nice touch!
I quite often get Glen Moray for a go to drink becuase it's a bargain-basement studenty malt. Malt tastes on a blended budget lol

Thanked: 293You guys are making my liver beg for a workout.
In my world, Jameson is good for one thing - shots - with the obligatory "just had a shot of Jameson face" afterwards. I prefer Tullamore Dew, but even that is a little too harsh to be had neat. It's great on the rocks though. The Jameson Gold (I forget how long this is aged) is a beauty -- it's great neat or otherwise. Really smooth -- but expensive.
It's been a long time since I've had a Bushmill's (white or black), but if you like it that much I do recommend Tullamore if you haven't tried it already. I think the two are on-par with each other.
I have a soft spot for Scotch. I am in the market for some Laphroaig, based on recommendations here. I think I'll wait until after I get back from Vegas this weekend, though. There's no telling what I'll do to my body/wallet out there.
Enjoy!

Hm, I don't think I really make the Jameson face, whether shooting or sipping it. (I used to shoot it, these days I sip it). Harsh, yes, but still not too bad.
I have actually tried Tully, but only once and it was just a shot in the middle of a night of drinking. On your recommendation, I'll give it a real try. Thanks for the suggestion.

Thanked: 30EZRA BROOKS
HELLO
If you want to try a real good Kentucky straight bourbon whiskey you should give " EZRA BROOKS " a try. I used to be a hard core " JACK DANIELS " drinker . It is 90 proof in stead of JACK DANIELS 80 proof and it is as smooth as silk underwear. Give it a try !
