Fancy Sunglasses... Worth it?

so ive got a limited tiem connecion on designer sunglasses, i can get oakleys and versace's and what not for less than half price, less than what they go for on ebay.
do you guys think i should take them up on the offer?
they got some nice oakley crosshairs i like for under 70 bucks. there goin for 100 on the bay.
didnt see any others i like, they all look like 80's style japanese glasses.

I'd say that if you think they'll look good, it's worth it. IIRC, all Oakleys come with a lifetime warranty, and they're supposed to be well constructed (at least the ones I had years ago were). Think about it this way; a good pair will last years and years, so it may well be worth the money.

My personal opinion, is that oakleys/etc are a waste of money. I'm not suggesting $5 sunglasses from the convenience store, but $20-$30 will get you good looking glasses with proper polarization and no distortion that look just fine. $35 will get you all that, and "look" just like oakleys.




On the other hand once, I once had a guy at a pipe shop explain how to keep from ever losing another lighter (which I was complaining about), and the same could be applied to sunglasses.

After I finished my well-worn rant about not being able to keep track of a lighter for more than 3 days, he told me he could sell me a lighter I would never lose.

When I asked him how on earth he could manage that, he pulled out a $600.00 gold colibri lighter with marble inlays. "If you spend $600 on a lighter, you're not going to lose it. Trust me."



Of course, my ex-wife lost about 4 pairs of oakleys in as many years, so maybe it doesn't apply. Or, maybe the oakley's just weren't expensive enough. lol

H4P makes a valid point about the lifetime warranty, but IME, the thing that usually kills sunglasses isn't damage. It's loss.

They can't fix your sunglasses if you can't find them.


Also, since this does sound just a little bit shady, there's a good chance that you won't be able to get warranty service, and that's assuming they're even real oakleys and not knock-offs.

well i got Lots of 30 dollar iron man glasses... they seem to be the only ones constructed well enough for me at that price......
my ironmans claimed to be polarized... but they didnt work on the special displays they had in the designer shop, like the oakleys did.
*there definitly real, NIB, so manufacturer warranty should be good. there from a friend who runs a designer glasses shop
i also got a friend that manages an omaha steak franchise, so i can get all htere fancy steaks at ground chuck prices.

Off topic, sunglasses annoy me. You're supposed to wear them in the sun yet you can't buy really dark glasses. Grrrr.

Oakleys are great and provide very good protection against all UV and are ANSI(sp) tested. They are acceptable shooting glasses at some ranges and could be used as safety glasses if you really couldn't get a pair anywhere else at the time. I paied $236 for my Square Wires and they're worth every penny. Doc told me to wear them every time I go outside.

Off topic, sunglasses annoy me. You're supposed to wear them in the sun yet you can't buy really dark glasses. Grrrr.

There's a shop in Salem, OR called "Glance."

They don't have an eye doctor, but you can take your prescription there if you have one. They've got all kinds of designer frames, including some that are literally one of a kind.


What they specialize in, is non-prescription glasses that look like prescription glasses. Seriously. One of my sisters (who bears very little resemblance to me) is 5'11" and very pretty. People always treated her like an idiot. They took one look, and assumed that she couldn't be pretty and intelligent.

She went to glance, and got a pair of "optically correct" glasses, that looked like reading glasses, but had no actual prescription. They were just ground based on the measurements of her eyes so there would be zero distortion, but they'd look like prescription glasses.

The funny thing was, it actually worked. People immediately treated her differently, just by putting on a pair of "reading" glasses.


Now, I tell you that seemingly irrelevant story, to tell you that they will also let you put tinted lenses in any pair of frames, and you can have them tinted any way you want, including ridiculously dark if that's what you want.

Since then, I've discovered that most any place that sells prescription glasses can do the same thing. Just go in, pick out some frames that would make good sunglasses, and have non-prescription (but optically correct) lenses installed, and they can order them with whatever level of tinting you want.

Just be careful. My ex-father in law tried to do that after I told hi about glance, and he insisted on such dark tinting, and so many special coatings, that when they were all done, he had to send them back to be stripped and re-coated with a lighter tint because he couldn't see through them at all.

no. maybe at walmart where they dont sell real stuff...
like i said these glasses go for double(and then some) what i can get them for, on ebay.
and its limited time because im helping them move this weekend, so its kinda now or never.
