Thanked: 293Recommend a GPS?
I am in the market for an international GPS handheld that does not require hookup to an international data plan (i.e. cell phone).
The only real features that I require out of this thing are the ability to get both street level GPS placement (preferably with street names and the ability to input directions) and wilderness options (topography, etc.).
Has anybody dealt with such a device, in say, the $200 USD range?
Thanks,
Ogie

Thanked: 586I am a huge Garmin fan. They have handheld units with software options. Pirces? Shop online. Kick a lot of tires.
Here is their website: http://www.garmin.com/garmin/cms/site/us

Garmin Nuvi 250 is down to about $99 on Amazon. My daughter has the 200 model, and loves it.Brother-in-law has a 200w and loves it.I bought the 350 model a couple years ago because it speaks the street names, not just turn right etc.I did a ton of research at that time and the Garmin was the preferred brand by a small margin.Be advised, though,I don't think any of them are perfect. They will occasionally be wrong or confused.

Garmin hands down.
It is easier to fool people than to convince them they have been fooled. Twain

Thanked: 10I LOVE my MIO Digi-Walker 720. It's my 2nd Mio and the first was also very nice. The 720 does everything I want. .
1. 2.0 Megapix camera with location logging, Incase you want to keep or send someone the location of where the picture was taken through Yahoo maps.
2. Store Pictures, MP3's, Movies (yep it plays movies) through the SD card slot (hot swapable).
3. Business card scanner. Take a picture of the business card you want to scan and it makes a NEW contact for you and puts address, business name and phone numbers in proper areas for you.
4. Blue tooth - Phone or stereo head set, or you can use the amplified speaker built into the windshield cradle.
I bought mine just over a year ago so I'm sure there is a beefier model out there now.

Garmin's mapset does well for the US. Some of the points of interest are outdated, though. The basic mapset is useful. For instance, newer on/off ramps arent always repersented and the directions given can reflect this. I own a Garmin and overall I would say it is quite reliable. Also, map updates are pricey.
Tom-Tom has a good mapset of Europe. When I was in the market a few years ago, the Tom-Tom wasnt recommended for the US due to sketchy mapsets. I think this has changed, although I am not up to date on exactly where Tom-Tom is with this.
