Wow, I never really liked the stuff. Its just OK? I would never go out and buy one, just at Grandmas house I would have a small piece.

I dunno, just something about it I didn't like too much.

I will have to try the salt thing.

    Watermelon Gazpacho

8 cups finely diced seedless watermelon (about 6 pounds with the rind)
1 medium cucumber, peeled, seeded and finely diced
1/2 red bell pepper, finely diced
    1/4 cup chopped fresh basil
    1/4 cup chopped flat-leaf parsley
    3 tablespoons red-wine vinegar
    2 tablespoons minced shallot
    2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
    3/4 teaspoon salt

Mix watermelon, cucumber, bell pepper, basil, parsley, vinegar, shallot, oil and salt in a large bowl. Puree 3 cups of the mixture in a blender or food processor to the desired smoothness; transfer to another large bowl. Puree another 3 cups and add to the bowl. Stir in the remaining diced mixture. Serve at room temperature or chilled.

    Default Watermelon

    Gentlemen,

I, too, love the watermelon, especially when cut into in the watermelon patch.

A long time ago, in a land far away from America, I would visit my grandmother's village every summer. On many warm and sunny days the village kids and I would spend long hours sitting under a tree on the side of the watermelon patch devouring the heavenly fruit.

We also had a game, whereby we would guess how many seeds there would be in, say, a two-square inch of the melon when cut out. Then the contestant would pull out his knife and play the surgeon.

If I remember, we had a cushion of a number of seeds in the final count. I also remember having won once or twice.

Was there a prize? No prize. Kids do not need prizes to make something fun out of nothing, especially on a warm day, sitting in the shade of a tree on the side of the watermelon patch, and scarfing up one of the world's greatest delights.

    The watermelon.

    Regards,

    Obie

I just got in from pulling up my first watermelon patch and I was very happy with it's yield given that I am new to vegetable gardening as of this spring! I started with nine watermelon plants from seed. After transplanting them into the front of my garden they slowly started to crawl. After about a month, they began to take over the space between the garden and the house and I counted 15-20 baby melons! After a couple more weeks, only three of the melons were still there and growing, then two died and I was down to one The vines continued to crawl and my one melon continued to grow. I read up on how to tell when to harvest and when i thought it was displaying many of the signs, I picked it. It was 8 lbs and when I cut it open it was mostly white inside with a little red. Even though it wasn't ready, it was still sweet and tasty. With extremely prolific vines and no fruit I didn't know what I was doing wrong, I was watering deep every other day and fertilizing every week Another couple weeks passed and we had a big weekend of rain so I went picking through the patch and much to my surprise, I found like 16 melons, three of which were well over 10 lbs and all of the others healthy These pictures are of the second melon I took prom the patch, a whopping 20 lbs! It had a nice hollow sound, deep ridges, and the tendrils on the vine opposite the stem were brown but when I cut the darn thing it was almost totally white inside but like the first one, still juicy and sweet. We just got back form a two week vacation and a friend had been watering for me but the patch had already started to die before we left. When we got home yesterday, the patch was half gone but there were 5 nice looking melons sitting out there! I took the best looking one in and cut it open......FINALLY a deep red beautiful fruit!!! Watermelon is my girlfriend's favorite so I am happy I was able to giver a nice one, I have never been a big fan. It's more the texture because I really love the flavor but when you bite into a warm piece of melon that is just minutes off the vine, there is really no comparison, it is just divine!

Well, I guess I rambled a bit, here's the pics.............................

I would eat and eat till I was sick... and it was awesome! And i remember peeing every 15 minutes for a couple hours after
As a kid I remember the grocer cutting a plug out of the melon for my mother to taste. I wish they still allowed that. I don't know how many melons I've purchased that end up having no taste.
