JimR- I have always been bemused by the melon section of Japanese grocery stores. Each melon or cantaloupe carefully wrapped, and damn expensive too!
Don't I know it, man. Melons especially get me...wrapped in paper, boxed and then wrapped again...

And the foam wrapped peaches costing $5 each...

If you go to the "cheap" grocery stores, you'll find less expensive watermelons (still higher than the States, of course) and they're not individually wrapped, but you're right--the Japanese practice of individually wrapping fruit is stunning to me. I've seen ONE BANANA carefully wrapped in a plastic bag...why? Fruit has its own bag!!!
