Yes, Tom, silencers, most shooters in the UK use them on their rifles, you will need to apply for one when you apply for your firearms licence, there's no problem getting one but you need a firearms licence to own one, it will also come stamped with the calibre of your rifle on it.

I might be wrong but I seem to remember it wasn't as easy as just applying for a firearms license.

My friend had a shotgun and before he got a license he had to prove he had permission of a farmer to shoot , pidgeons I think it was. He also had to prove he had a lockable gun cabinet to keep it in.

Unless you were in the country , a firearm (shotgun) licence was hard to come by and if you lived in the city, you could just about forget it.

As for as handguns, never even seen one in the UK.

Course I could be completely wrong, I had no firearm experience outside the Army.

Steve, yes indeed, there are many terms and conditions before you will be granted a firearms licence in the UK, you get home visits from the Firearms officer, you must give full permission to the police so they can access all your medical records, you also need two independent referees who know you well and are not family members, permission from landowners, the land must have Police clearance for use of firearms you also need a doctor to clear you and say you are mentally fit to own a firearm, plus you need a bolted secure gun cabinet, there is also a restriction on the amount of ammunition you can own, it's difficult to own a firearm or shotgun in the UK, I do predict the US will eventually go in the same direction as the UK making it a real pain in the butt and putting a lot of people off applying.

Seems here you must pony-up 200 and fill out a form and wait. I guess they do background checks as with a firearm purchase.

I fired a friends CZ Scorpion with one a bit. Quite (or quiet?) nice.

They seem to vilify silencers. I had read where as you apply, you are subject to search so no components, kits, or actual silencers better not show up before you are approved. YET they sell air rifles with them attached. I might get one for my air rifle. After investigating, of course.

They were selling some called solvent traps a while back. The ruse is that as cleaning a firearm, it captures the solvent when cleaning the bore.
Then, they have adapters to use screw-on oil filters. Silly.

The feds can do as they please. I prefer to keep my name off of lists for some reason.
Still, a 500 investment is nothing to sneeze at before all is said and done.

Tom, once you shoot with a moderator it's hard to go back, PCP air rifles are fantastic once fitted with one, the trouble with PCP air rifles in the UK is anything over 12lb foot per lb is the classed as a firearm, so you must then apply in the same way as you would for a firearm, I already have that variation on my certificate to own a .177 PCP over 12lb, they are now hunting big game using PCP rifles which is amazing with an incredible amount of technology.

Similar though not quite as severe a run around in Canada. I sent my PAL, Possession and Acquisition License, renewal in 2 1/2 months before it expired via registered and signed for mail. I know they received it within days of sending it via the Can Post web site. It is now 2 week past the expiry date and I am still waiting. Was told by the powers to be to wait another month before panicking. They truly can't organise a one man rush to a 10 man out house. Seems to be a skit right out of Saturday Night Live. I don't mind the paper work just the the plug out and get it done.

I came across an interesting fact yesterday.

The US has 4% of the worlds population, and 46% of the worlds guns.

Not a comment on gun control just a statistic that I found interesting.

    Here is the real stat

Law abiding citizens in the US have more guns and ammo than ALL the Militaries and all Law Enforcement agencies in the world combined

Hunters in just 3 EASTERN states make up more men under arms than all the Armies in the world combined.
