    Default A No-Wedding Gift

The strikingly beautiful daughter of some friends of ours had announced her engagement with much enthusiasm about a year ago. We met the lucky guy at a party last winter. Perhaps it was partly my thinly veiled envy but I told Scarlett on the way home that I was less than impressed with the young lady's choice for a husband. For lack of any better description, to me the guy seeme like a total putz. As my vote carried no weight in the decison, our friends scheduled the wedding for August 15th.

Well, I was right! The bride to be found her dear fiancee was shopping the gay singles ads on pornographic swingers websites. She made this discovery a week before the big day (which is infinitely better than finding out a week after the big day.) The nuptials were called off. After meeting the guy I suspected she accepted his proposal only to get a gift from me. To show my support, I made her a gift anyway. It is made from Canadian big leaf maple burl, Macassar ebony and turquoise:

I hope she likes it. I'm sure it beats being a beard for some creepy putz.

How could she NOT like it, Brad? It's GORGEOUS. I wish I was not getting married, too...

That's a beautiful gift. Now, if you could manage a photo of the girl that would be most appreciated!

As requested. The recipient of my gift is the taller of these two lovely sisters:

Brad man, you do some gorgeous woodwork. She's gonna love it. Wish I could finish wood like you. Maybe someday after as much practise huh?

    Red,

One of the best things about being an artist as opposed to a craftsman is that my work doesn't have to serve any purpose at all. I have a catch-all name for everything that has no specific purpose but is not quite a sculpture. I would call this a "candy dish".

This is a fragment of a much larger bowl. I freaked a bunch of people out when I entered my "bowl fragment" phase. I was in the shop where I teach and I turned a very nice bowl on the lathe. Then I took it to the band saw and cut it up. People were shouting at me. They were saying they would be thrilled if they could make such a nice bowl. One guy said he would have bought the bowl for his wife. I had to show them my design drawings to prove I hadn't tripped off the line and gone on a destructive rampage. This piece is a fragment of the same bowl that spawned the two fragments I used in this "candy dish" which now lives in Belgium. It was the 50th anniversary gift for the parents of a friend who is my biggest patron:
    It is called Flight.

At first glance I thought it was an old Pentium planted inside a bowl.

I, for one, like it. It's an awesome idea and looks great. I think candy dish sums it up quite well in fact.
