Were I to purchase a blackpowder pistol I would turn over every rock until I found a Ruger New Army.

Years back, I bought a Colt approved replica - a stainless 1860 Army made by Uberti. I think I loaded it with about 30 gr. of GOEX FFg and that revolver would shoot shot, after shot, after shot, to point of aim at about 25 yards even with the crude notch in the hammer for the rear sight. Modern revolvers are faster and a lot less smokey, but I wouldn't want to be the target if someone were shooting at me with one of those replicas.

If you're not dead-set on a kit try Cimarron Firearms. You may pay more, but the fit and finish on these is par none.

Navy Arms has some nice muzzle loading pistols as well. Still a bit pricey, bt nice.

I used to have an Italian version of the Colt Navy .36, which unfortunately chain fired on me one day (4 cylinders let go at once) with resulting black powder tattooing on my hand which lasted weeks. Make sure to put fill the chamber ends with grease after you load! (Wonder Wads didn't do the trick that time)

Yep..I was afraid to look at my hand after the shockwave, huge recoil, red flame , cloud of smoke etc. Was not sure it would still be there. Still, black powder is fun stuff, if you follow ALL the safety rules! Grease those chamber mouths!

I quit using felt cylinder plugs and went to grease after I had a chain fire with a Colt Walker. Fortunately the Walker is so heavy and the cylinder so long the only thing that got damaged was my underwear.

I was in a black powder club in Arizona. We had member the collected Sharps. He had a 50/110 that he would put a hole in a hole in a hole at 200 yards. He would dig out impact area of the berm and recover his lead.

As a kid the first time I loaded my late fathers' Remington cap and ball, I used petrolium jelly, ever time I fired a shot, it let two go, I would hand it to Dad, and he would only have a cap go off, took me a moment or two to fiqure I was letting two shots go at once !! have used waterpump grease ever since !!
I sure as hell would like a Sharps, probable in 45/70, I am getting a little fragile in my old age !!

cheers the smell of black powder in the morning. Ps made my first batch and put it though my Colt Navy, went off ok, but not a lot of punch. Have to find some willow for charcoal
Keep yo hoss well shod an yo powdah dry !
