    Default Cheap Scotch?

There seems to be a lot of knowledge about single malt scotch here, so I thought I would look for some affordable bottles. I have relatives in Bardstown Kentucky, where basically all bourbon is made, but I recently discovered the Macallan. I likey, unfortunately. The winter is always a tough time for me money wise, and this winter is looking much worse than any other. My goal is to find some decent single malts for around $50. I just don't have the money to spend $100+ right now, and it would probably be wasted on me anyway.

I was thinking about trying a bottle of Aberfeldy next. I would bet that it will be much different than the Macallan that is aged in sherry casks. $34 doesn't seem to horrific either. So any ideas on other decent, affordable single malts?

Jameson and Bushmills are both irish, quite good and affordable (don't know what they cost there, though). Sadly, same as with razors, you have to pay for quality...

*chuckle* And none of the above are both single malt AND scotch.

I don't know what a bottle of Glenfiddich runs these days, but I know it's less than Macallan.

AND, the Johnny Walker is a good blend. The green label is nice stuff, and the Black is also pretty good. Not smashing, but at $36 a bottle very attractive for a college student like me!

Bowmore 12 is my go to bottle. If you like Islays, you can't miss with it.

If I'm going to be a traitor to my Bourbon heritage, its going to be with a single malt scotch.

It looks like both are in the $20 range. Thats what I want to see. When you say IF you like Islays, is that a hint?

"Ooops". I mentioned they were irish, but I didn't remember they were mixed. Meh. I likey and they are serviceable. YMMV.

Well. Why not just go ahead and get the bottle of Macallan and nurse it a bit more - There's huge differences in whiskeys and just because somebody else likes a brand more affordable, doesn't mean it tickles you pink.

I compare this to buying your first razor - sure, a presharpened dovo from Lynn will sting alot more than buying beaten vintage from ebay, but you'll know what you get. In the worst case you're several tenners farther from the bottle you like.

Hear hear! A good bottle of scotch should last awhile.... sipped in nice little snifters. When you're looking for mood-altering.... well, that's what cheap rum is for.

+1, or Ardbeg or Laphroaig if you want a "paetier" taste.
