Not a book but certainly a true life adventure- Correspondence of William Barret Travis from The Alamo Feb. and Mar. 1836. His letter of Feb. 24, 1836 addressed to "The people of Texas and all Americans in the world" has been called by some the most heroic document in American history.

If you enjoy African big game hunting, you might try "Peter Hathaway Capstick":
"Death in the Dark Continent"
"Death in the Silent Places"
"Death in the Long Grass" etc. etc.
A good mix of African adventure both re-told and first hand experiences.

"Hell, I Was There!" The autobiography of Elmer Keith. Mr. Keith is credited as the father of the .44 Magnum. He was a cowboy, guide, tinkerer and gunscribe. I have read this book once a year for the last 20 years. Just as soon as the leaves fall and the wind gets a chill in it.
