I did. A four button plaid with a laminated wood wainscoting cummerbund. I'm wearing my ex's tartan, though not as a kilt, I am having a pair of 22 hole steel tip Gripfasts made from it to go along with my stovepipe hat made from the liver of a genetically reconstituted mastadon and topped with a live Gray Owl (we'll be using easy-off tape, so she can be released after the ball).
It might not be comfortable, or at the cutting edge of fashion...but no one will forget me.
In actuality, I am going with the traditional one button. In black. Windsor collar with a vest and cravat (proper word? I just mean a long tie). I can always tie a bowtie if I wish.
Deciding between a suit I saw at nordtroms, Brooks Brothers, the SIgnature that I posted yesterday from Jos A Banks..even thugh it wasn't in contention yesterday. There are two custom makers, one is even only an hour away, that I am considering, though I don't know if I could have the suit in time for the first event.

Funny, I hadn't thought much about a tux since I have my options pre-determined in the military.
We have several versions for formal "Dinner-dress" or "Mess-dress" which include a double-breasted jacket with bow-tie or what some consider a "western" waistcoat with cummerbund. We have the option of a white (summer) or black coat but most commands will call for the black...

Sometimes the variations can get silly, but the classic black with black or white bow tie is hard to beat.
