Thanked: 1English Bulldogs
Well, its coming up on time for us to get a dog, and we already have a cat who thinks he's a dog. Always liked the breed, anything I should know? I heard that they have a tendancy to get ill.

You can get good info from a club of aficionados of the breed. may be worth joining before you buy.
Very high HD rate!

Bulldogs are wonderful but I sincerely recommend reading up on the breed before getting one. Granted this should be true for any breed you consider adopting.
my bully "Smudge" is a wonderful dog, stubborn as a mule (which is common to bull breeds), but I love him.
Smudge is my first bully and he has been healthy his whole life, so I can't verify anything about illness at this time (yet I've read they have a higher risk for illness than most breeds).
One thing I can tell you, if you get them cheap dog food/treats they can stink (fart) bad. If I give Smudge Beggin Strips, Pupparonies or pretty much any treat similar he gets really bad gas. Even science diet gives him bad gas.
If you get em from the breeder ask the breeder they use for food, some breeders will suggest the blend they use. I've also found that Royal Canin's bulldog specific food also keeps Smudge from stinking.

Oh and English Bulldogs are not cheap and if you read up on how they breed em you'll understand why. Don't try to find some back alley deal on getting one, it's worth the extra cost to know you got it from a conscientious breeder.

We dog sat for my sons two bulldogs last month. They were both really nice dogs but like a bull in a china shop for sure. Our little dogs, a cairn and a Brussels Griffon were both scared to death of them. Probably because of the snorting they do. And yes they do fart bad.
PS. I have to add here, they were the most loving dogs I have ever seen. Very good natured. Wanted on our lap but way too big and heavy for that.Last edited by mackie; 02-14-2010 at 02:24 PM.

Meet Lilly! We rescued her more than a year ago. She is the most laid-back, affectionate sweetheart you could imagine.... but seriously high maintenance!
I'll never get a different breed of dog. We luv our bully!

Thanked: 530I've played with Lynn's bulldog, Stella, a good deal, and her older sister some (she's more laid back than Stella) and they are just the greatest. So much personality, so friendly, and, to me, cute as all getout. And Don's bulldog -whom I just met today- was equally friendly.
I love bulldogs. Them and Italian Greyhounds... 30 MPH couch potatos
Cheers,
Jeremy
