The Local Pub!
We are so lucky to have four really nice pubs in Atlanta!
The Brick Store Pub- My absolute favorite in the area! 14 beers on tap in the lower section and an 11 tap exclusively Belgian bar upstairs and countless bottles. They consistently source hard to find beers and rare treats. They even have a beer engine!
The Porter-Another gastropub with a huge list and many taps (also a beer engine). The food here is really good!
The Book House-Great food and a really cozy pub with books lining the walls for your reading pleasure. The love of learning, the sequestered nooks and all the sweet serenity of books! They, too, have a beer engine. (sensing a theme here?)
Holman and Finch-The first thing to greet you when you walk in the door? A 10 foot glass salumeria case filled with sausages and bacon being house cured! The food here is top notch even if the beer selection is limited. These guys focus on great c0cktails. It's not on the menu, but if you are in there after ten and you are lucky, they make cheeseburgers that are out of this world.
So what is your favorite local watering hole? Which ones should I absolutely not miss if I visit your town?

Thanked: 234I have 3 local pubs. The closest one I used to work in, 5 min walk. Quite a big pub, but it's got a really nice feel to it. I would say it's my local, and although I used to frequent more or less 7 days a week, it's now more like 1, maybe 2.
The next one is a pub I've never had great affection for. I guess the crowd in there is just not one I know and it's quite cliquey.
The farthest one is probably the one I use most in the summer, or I did last year. It's a solid 20 min walk, but it's tiny and you only need half a dozen people in there to give it a bit of atmosphere. Unfortunately the best land lord left a few years ago, and it's had a string of pretty poor ones.
I miss going to the pub often, but I don't miss spending all the money I used to.

Sorry to say it, but here in Cheltenham I have five decent pubs within 200 yards!

no freakin pubs
That's right, my town doesn't have a single pub. We have Murph's. Murph's Town Lounge. No books, no ferns, no Belgian anything. Six taps, maybe 4 working at any given time. There's a sofa against the wall if you're too tired to sit on a barstool. There's the wonderful Sylvia to serve you drinks and chicken wings. It's dark; sometimes it's crowded, sometimes it's deserted. Nobody gives you any grief for being an old fat white guy suckin down a cold Labatts. Did I mention Sylvia? Yeah, I love it.
Don't get hung up on hanging hairs.

The local pub in the UK is an endangered species. We have a few good ones left, but most country pubs have become upmarket eateries.
Beer in UK pubs is relatively expensive. The tradition in the UK is to buy a 'round of drinks' ie. each person in the group buys a drink for each of his friends and this is reciprocated. These days you almost need to take out a bank loan for an evening in the pub. You probably don't have this quaint custom in the U.S.
I'm lucky enough to have a good pub 100yds from my house, but it has changed owners several times in the past few years as different landlords have struggled to make it profitable.'Living the dream, one nightmare at a time'

Thanked: 227You gotta come further up the road Mr Wizard.
Ok these are not local but if you're in Scotch land places you must try
On the little isle of cumbrea in the town of mMillport where I used to bide, a little place called bobbies tavern, a quaint little place, not many bears on tap, a decent selection of scotch and some good chat and banter.
out near my folks and near the glengoyne distillery, also selling a few of their wares, the blane valley inn, recently taken over by a family of young guys, and stronger than ever, again not many beers, but a fair selection of scotch, phenomenal food and some good chat.

Here in Rochester, my favorite two are
Monty's Krown - A dive bar and my regular bar. Regular happy hour gang, regular night crew. Surprisingly good beers, considering the place doesn't look like anything. They tend to favor IPA's, as that is what the regulars like, but there is always (I think...) at least Guinness and Murphy's. Free darts, $1 pool, and $something Family Guy Pinball.
The Old Toad - The closest thing to a British pub that I've ever been to. The vast majority (if not all) of the staff is exchange students from the UK - good for the atmosphere but not always great for service because no one's here for that long. Great taps, huge list of bottles, and British food. Trivia is... I forget what night, Sun or Mon I think, and practice trivia is the night before. Darts, but I think it's pay to play, and it's not steel tipped (IIRC).

There arent that many really good ones where I live, but some absolutely great ones near the office!
The Bow Wine Vaults on Bow Lane in the City has to be my favourite. Great food, great service and friendly staff. Its got a bit tragic now, when I walk in the barmaid greets me by name and has uncorked a bottle of Rioja before I even sit down...! I go there alot!
Theres also a Jamies round the corner which is very good too, and also has great staff. They do great food and really look after their customers.
Theres also The Old Jamaica, which has been around for centuries. They still have the old door step from when the pub was first built and its dished right down because so many people have walked over it. It stands on the site of the old coffee house that was built in 1652. Samuel Pepys wrote in his diary about it! I've attached a picture of the step at the bottom.
Then theres The Old Doctor Butlers Head, which still has the original gas lighting. No electricity there...! They also have a good range of cigars, if you're partial to one.
I love all those places, and go as much as I can. They all have real character and flair!Last edited by Stubear; 02-24-2010 at 03:26 PM.

Don't forget about the Harp in Roswell, Limmerick Junction in the Highlands and then you have Meehans in various locations. Did you ever go to McCoolgans when it was open? It was located in Alpharetta off of State Bridge Rd. That was the best pub in this entire state.
