Placer?
Like fishing it is grand excuse to get outside, smell bad and
have a good visit. It is also hard work. Sometimes it pays well.
If the season permits bring a fishing poll. Fish upstream from
the digging. A fresh trout dinner is killer. Lots of cowboy style
potatoes. A couple changes of dry clothes.
Hard rock?
Bring ear plugs. Hardrock mining is dangerous nasty dirty and hard work.

I've always wanted to head for the Yukon or someplace similar for a summer, do some panning, some fishing, and a lot of goofing off.

I would highly recommend heading to Northern Ontario for this. Home to some of the richest gold deposits in the world.

As long as you view it as a hobby and have fun it's ok. few make any real money and the ones that do barely make enough to pay for the trip and equipment. You could go to Brazil to Minas Gerais and there's all kinds of stuff to prospect however many who go there never return they just vanish of the face of the Earth.

Thanked: 234I've never had much desire to go prospecting, but one day I will buy a metal detector kit and spend many hours wandering around, seeing what I can dig up.

Thanked: 369Went up to the east fork of the San Gabriel river just a few weeks ago. Found a little color using a small sluice.
Prospecting is a lot of fun especially if you like getting out "in the country."

I go all the time! Usually either sluice boxing or highbanking depending on where you're headed for the day. Shoot me a PM if you're interested in getting some gold!

A friend of mine travelled to Sierra Leone to go diamond prospecting two or three years ago.
Come to think of it...I haven't heard from him since he left.
