    Default New Construction Project

Ok Gents - I am about to embark on a new construction project.

I am building a 140 sq ft 4 seasons room under my deck. A door wall in my basement walk out leads into the room.

Now here comes the challange. I am installing a ceiling under the deck and the whole room is on a slab - in Michigan! 42" frost line!

So I came up with a channel system against the house and under the deck that will allow the walls to float in the channels as the slab heaves during the winter. I drew up the plans and brought them to my building inspector. He passed them with flying colors and said it will work well.

Heat will be provided with a room space heater and a cieling fan for the summer. Plus (6) 3x4 windows and an exterior door wall. I need the room because I live on a wet land. Horrible mosquitos in the summer - 0 degrees in the winter. How am I going to relax and enjoy a fine pipe otherwise?

Materials are ordered and on their way. Wish me luck!

Thanks everyone - and rest assured I will be posting pics along the way.

I talked about the plan with the building inspector, and I am just constructing channels out of 1x6 wood with appropriate gaps for expansion. The slab can heave as much as 2 inches, so I will have the channels 5 inches deep and the wall will go into the channel 2 inches for the horizontal channels. In the vertical channel that is attached to the wall, I will leave 1/2 inch for material expansion between the edge of the wall and the front of the vertical.

I will leave 1/2 inch side to side in all channels for expansion. I will be stuffing these areas with fiberglass insulation to close the gaps.

Now this is the plan. I may have to make changes as I go along to accomodate the unexpected.

The roof is a product called Dry Snap. It uses the underside of a deck to create a ceiling and drainage system.
