Embedding for Aaron Coplands "Fanfare" was disabled so I had to go directly to youtube, if you go there be sure to check out the Woody Herman version for something a bit different! It was nice.

I always think of the Blues Brothers when I think of Ride of the Valkyries Hopefully the link works...

As far as Metallica goes; have you listened to the intro riff in Am I Evil?. It is based on Gustov Holtz's Mars from The Planets.

There were a couple of CDs out there about a decade or so named Heavy Classix (just looked and it was released in 1993, where does the time go?) Anyway, it was a good way to get someone who likes rock to listen a bit and maybe get a bit of appreciation for classical music.

My favourite classical piece is still Moussorgsky Pictures at an Exhibition. I really love The Hut of Baba Yaga and then the spectacular finish in The Great Gate of Kiev. Pictures at an Exhibition is an amazing work that is just as good with a solo piano as it is with a full orchestra.

Camille Saint-Saëns' 'Symphony No. 3 in C Minor' is one of my favourite pieces of music, as is Dvořák's 'From the New World'.

One piece that always tugs at my heart-strings is 'Balada' by a little known Romanian composer called Ciprian Porumbescu.

I had hard time choosing earlier, but since the thread got resurrected....

Looks like most of you are into romantic music, my favorite romantic piece really is Jacqueline du Pré's 1964 performance of Elgar's Cello Concerto in E minor. Of course, most of what was posted earlier is among my favorites too.

It's kind of a cliche, but I like Mozart's requiem so much that I've got 7 versions of it, but in my mind the perfect one is one by Toscanini (I'm not aware of any recording, or even if it ever happened, but it must have). Here are my top three in no particular order:

Concerto de Aranjuez is really good and how many pieces feature a classical guitar against a full orchestra

Mahler, Sibelius, Tchaikovski, Wagner, Bach... - all of them appear in several versions in my music library, which I guess can be a measure of what I like so much that I've got several interpretations of it.

Classic = undying. Hard to decide on just one. All are great in their unique way.

    Hi Gugi,
Love the choices you have. But I must say that this is nothing short of ironic...I was listening to Joaquin Rodrigo's Concierto de Aranjuez (Allegro con spirito) today...what a moving piece.

    Thank you

That is a beautiful piece. Thanks for sharing. I might have to try and find it on CD.
