Your Father's Mustache
Hello, thebigspendur:
I learned in the U.S. Army not to ever volunteer for anything, but here I am. Of course, I'll be delighted to contribute to this learned forum as much as I can.
Thank you for your kind remarks, my good man. I love this neighborhood.
Yes, Your Father's Mustache is an amazing place, not only as a warm and friendly barbershop but also a miniature museum of shaving stuff. My space was limited to only 800 words, so there was a lot I had to keep out.
Interestingly enough, the interior of the barbershop was used in the newest Dillinger movie with Mark Harmon. The two barber chairs date from 1890 or so. The all-wood back bar also is from about the same time.
Quite a place, this, and they also give straight shaves. By the way, Wally's cousin, the second barber, who was with the 101st Airborne "Screaming Eagles" in Vietnam, has the unit's "Screaming Eagle" patch tattooed on his arm. JimmyHAD will like that bit of news.
Anyway, I had great fun there.
Regards,
Obie

Obie,
Your Father's Mustache is located just few miles from where I live. I can't tell you how many times I've passed it going along Forest Home Avenue to somewhere else. I've even gone to the antique shop next door without knowing what it was about.
I have a few questions:
Do they use real straight razors or shavettes?
What is the cost of a shave?
Do they require appointments?
Thanks.
p.s. I remember when you were on WFMR.Last edited by diamondtim; 06-22-2010 at 03:07 AM.

Your Father's Mustache
Hello, diamondtim:
Thank you for your note.
Yes, Your Father's Mustache is a sweet escape into the past. So is master barber Wally. They have three barbers, who also give straight razor shaves. Tell Wally I sent you.
Shave: $20.
Haircut: $16
Appoint: Yes (414) 425-8990
Although not against the law in Wisconsin for barbers to use regular straight razors, almost no one does because of health issues, among other reasons. Straight razors with replaceable blades are the standard. Wally uses a brand called Weck.
Yes, my radio days at WFMR were unforgettable. WFMR was a boutique classical music station in Milwaukee that competed with the best of them around the country. I did morning drive there during three different periods through the years. I miss it. Eventually the place fell in mercenary corporate hands and was destroyed. Now it's some syrupy smooth jazz station where they've never heard of Duke Ellington, Miles Davis or John Coltrane. Oh, well . . .
Take care.
Regards,
Obie

Obie, I hear you! We haven't had real jazz in Milwaukee since the pinheads running WYMS changed formats to that Radio Milwaukee garbage. So much for progress under our benevolent rulers here in the Socialist Workers Paradise. My first exposure to jazz came from your co-worker, Ron Cuzner. I can still hear his distinctive speech pattern in my memory. Hope to read more from you.
