Well if she wants to be a well paid photographer I hope she likes weddings, because for many photographers that is the bread and butter. I prefer an artistic approach to landscape, nature and wildlife myself, alas not a profitable sideline unless you're Ansel Adams, Hugo Van Lawick or enjoy writing well written magazine articles or books on the subject.

If you do decide to take the plunge into Digital, you can go with whichever brand takes your fancy. It'll be a learning curve one way or the other. Optical zoom is more important than digital zoom if you're looking at compacts and what leadduck said, two 4G cards are almost the same cost as the same in 2G and far better than one 8G. Check the prices and work out the values, You might prefer two 8G's over a 16G.

Film is nice and I used to enjoy doing my own B/W processing, but colour and slide film was costing me a small fortune in processing. With digital you can just throw them straight onto your computer, print and put into an album for just a few cents.

She is hooked on outdoors as well, hope that gets her out more!!!

I'm looking for used equipment as I can't afford the new stuff and don't need to HUGE MP cameras, but I like manual focus so I'll be hanging out at local shops keeping an eye out for good deals.

Macro will probably be at least 50% of my shots, easy. So I'd be far more inclined to put my $$ on that kind of set up vs anything telephoto and such. Coin dates, lizard eyes, aquarium fish, Razor stamps and such do more for me than reaching across a canyon to see a tree... unless a cool lizard was on it....

if you are going slr i would definately suggest you invest in a good macro lens then, they are made for just that purpose and most of the them double as a standard lens as well, they just have that little extra focus range to get a sharp focus at only inches away
