[QUOTE=1OldGI;821056][B] I go to the Thompson Cigars website and spy a medium body cigar called the Old Timer for < $1 a stick..... cheap machine these are hand made Honduran cigars..... absolutely delicious.

I make a point never to be jealous of anyone, a pointless thing to be. A dreamer, yes, but never envious..... except when it comes to U.S. tobacco! You may think that strange, what with the U.S. embargo on Havana cigars, while our tobacconists have them stacked to the ceiling. Treat yourself to a visit to an online U.K. cigar supplier, and I guarantee your jaw will hit the floor when you see the prices of any cigar from anywhere however lowly. It's mindblowing, and is of course completely down to tax.
These Old Timers sound like a Thompson house brand, and I am very tempted to order a couple of boxes, And a box or two of Don Chu Chu...... any good? If they slip through, all well and good. If they don't, they don't, and Customs & Excise will crucify me.
This tax thing here is nothing short of life-ruining. Gasoline is today £1.40 a liter, and unless my arithmetic is out, that's $10.10 a gallon.

I haven't seen them before but I will keep an eye out for them.

I have a feeling you are talking about the non- Cuban montecristo. Am I correct?

Yes, they are a Thompson's House Cigar but they're absolutely delicious, in fact I just finished one out on the lanai. What a great refreshment after evening PT (a beer and a stogie) Wow! That's quite a pretty penny for a gallon of gas. Sadly there are those in my own government that think it only fair that we are paying similar prices for a gallon of gas. You're right on both counts whether it's gas or the precious vitamin N what our governments know we need they will tax as heavily as they can get away with.

At any rate, I only recently started to dabble in cigars. I'm a life-long pipe smoker by trade. Recently, it occurred to me that it had easily been 15 years since I smoked my last cigar and as it turns out the one I picked up (a La Aroma de Cuba, New Blend Churchill) was quite possibly the best cigar I've ever smoked (including some Cubans that I picked up in Turkey several years back). So a new obsession was born. I'm finding out that the more of these things I smoke, the more I want to smoke. I think steady state will end up being one on the way to work, one at lunch and one in the evening. Most of the higher end stuff, I simply could not afford to smoke in that volume I began looking around for an affordable cigar that I could smoke and enjoy. The Thompson Old Timer definitely made the cut. I don't know how much the Customs Nazis will nail you on a couple bundles of these Thompson cigars but it's definitely worth a try. The purchase price can't be beat for sure. As a matter of fact, I'm off to Thompson's on Saturday for a bit of exploring. By the way, while I doubt I can afford large quantities of these Aroma de Cubas, once I get a humidor, I wouldn't mind keeping four or five of these in the humidor for special occassions. Of course my daily smokes will be something far more affordable.

Ah, engaging a bit of quinine therapy in the Great White North. I always say that one can't be too careful with the malaria threat once the mosquitos come out in the summer time. The prudent course is large quantities of gin and tonic before the mosquitos are out in force. Also a wonderful choice of stogie to go with your therapeutic cocktail.
