Just a FYI if anyone is curious my new Savinelli pipe, which happened to be in the bargain pile of pipes at the store turned out to be part of the Private label series. I have smoked it just a few times and found that it didn't gurgle once as opposed to the Peterson which seems to gurgle rather often. Inside the pipe has a triangular piece of balsa wood which I imagine helps drink up the moisture. This pipe smokes very well and is seemingly quite forgiving. As a newbie to pipes I initially saw them as basically the same a bowl and a hole to a mouthpiece with only ornamental variations. I see now that design matters.
Peterson system pipes were designed precisely for the reason of reduction of dottle due to the cooling chamber built into them.
Now that you mentioned I had to look into the the two different system types. it seem Savinelli used a similar dottle trap inspired by Peterson system and just added the balsa filter and a mouthpiece that diffused the smoke better. Im sure its just me granted I dont know much about this, and it seems I am smoking in a generally high humidity environment because its summer and I do this out doors using fresh moist right out of the tin tobaccos. But at present level of ability the Savinelli is making me look like I know what i'm doing and it just wont fail no matter how fast or slow I smoke. I dunno maybe just got lucky and got a good smoking pipe the other is by no means bad I like it very much.
You're doing just fine.No need to fret about being a newb.We all were once . Those Peterson's are well built pipe . I have two system pipes currently.One is my very first pipe ever and I plan on eventually getting it repaired and up to snuff or puff as it were. My other one ,a system 303 is a great pipe also. I get dottle more often if I smoke outdoors in winter. Dottle is dottle and rears up here n there.

"Dottle is dottle". The Dottle is actually the remnants of the tobacco after you have finished your bowl. It can range from a gray/white dry ash (preferred) to goopy wet tobacco.
Razorfaust--congrats on your new pipe, glad it is smoking well for you. Don't forget to buy some more of those disposable balsa filters.
Sherlock Holmes saved the dottle from his pipe in a slipper that was hung from the fireplace mantle and then resmoked it. Something that I never tried to duplicate.
