Reminds me a lot of Solani 633 perique flake
I think I would dig out the old Dr G and then do some sampling at the tobacco shop of a few different types of tobacco. Perhaps an aromatic, English, Oriental and Virginia or Virginia Perique mix. May take a few trips but at least you could rule some out and have an idea of what may interest you. Perhaps you tobacconist would sell you some small samples of each. Once you find out which direction you want to go with tobacco then buy a few small pouches to see what is working for you.
If that seems to be working then look at a pipe in the 50-100 dollar range. No need to buy a good pipe and then find that a pipe is not right for you. You could also try some cobs to start and if it does not work there is little to no investment.
Many people try a pipe and give up quickly. I've been smoking a pipe for over 40 years and think I'll stick with it. See if it's right for you before making a big investment.
Just put an order in with Smokingpipes.com. Dunhill tinned tobacco is on sale @ $9.00 + change per 50 gram tin, depending on the blend. I picked up some Aperitif, London Mixture, and my regular GL Pease Robusto, plus a tin of My Mixture BB1938 which I've never tried before. Aperitif is so good that I ordered two tins. If you like latakia blends I highly recommend it.
Well I came to the conclusion that Savinelli gives a good bang for the buck. I have also Peterson pipes and to be honest im sorry I bought them. Maybe there high end stuff or vintage is good but sorry to say lower end not happy. Stanwell very good also in my opinion.
Ok i like that idea. Did some digging around and found my old pipe without much fuss. I was mistaken.. Its a Dr. Grabow 'Duke'. Still had a filter in it. Man.. i must have chewed the heck out of it back in my glory days. Ill get to the shop and try and get some samples of what you mentioned. Thanks for the advice!!

Missed a few replies while typing that last one. Im making a list of the tobaccos you guys are recommending. Ill take it to my local shop and see what he has.
Thank you guys!!
I can recommend a couple of newbie friendly tobaccos. Dunhill Flake, Elizabeth Mixture, Orlik Golden sliced, C&D Briarfox a good easy Burley. For a taste of English / Latakia Frog Morton and Frog Morton Cellar. Just to name a couple.
Stanwell pipes are made and drilled to perfection , after all is the Royal pipe factoryQuote:
Stanwell very good also in my opinion.
Many pipes can only envy , the way that Stanwels smoke For a midle prise range pipe , for me they are the best option avaible on the market .
Now i do this all day and i see all of difeent pipes and colect opinions fom pipe smokers and pipemakers Stanwell worth every dollar you pay fot theyre pipe .
So, after all the great replies and options, I tried tooth paste (Tom's cinamint flavored propolis and myrrh) an old soft bristled tooth brush, and then a coat of Vaseline rubbed in with fingers and wiped off with a paper towel. Not spectacular results, but pretty darn good. Then a scrub inside the stem with a vodka soaked bristle pipe cleaner followed by soaked soft pipe cleaners, then a dry pipe cleaner. Used a Czech pipe tool to scrape the inner bowl followed by dry paper towel. I kept it as simple as possible and am happy with the results. Now maybe some salacious vintage pipe porn to follow, stand by.....
Just spent a little time on their site. Those are some very nice looking pipes!!
I saw a few i liked based purely on visual aesthetics. The Zebrano 246, Diamond 182, Army Mount 246.
Not out of my price range at all.. but i will be going cheap for a bit with my Dr.G as was suggested to see if this is something i want to get into again. I smoked my old pipe pretty regularly when i was younger so i think im headed that way.. also its a green light with the better half which helps.
