Pipe of the Day

Hey guys..gettin ready to hit the rack ,but I have a curiously dumb question here. I have switched to using good ol wooden matches to light my pipe lately and I swear I get a better light than when I use my pipe lighter(Not a BIC). Hence a better light and a better smoke. Is it just me me er what ??? :thinking:I feel like such a newb askin that sorry. ............Just got done havin a bowl of Hobbits weed in my Petey 317 in honor of the new trailer I saw tonight for the Hobbit comin out Dec 14 2012... Yay LOTR's !! Good night fellas !

I just got my mm cob and some mac baren 7 seas gold blend. Packed my pipe just a minute ago. Easier than I expected and less baccy needed than I thought.

Am keeping it for after doin the lawb this afternoon. Hope itll be ok sitting on the side.

So just had my first pipe.

Very odd. It started off rather bitter much like cigarette smoke. I persevered. About half way i realised I have no idea when I know the pipe is done........

I made an attempt at stopping the pipe by covering and sucking. I failed on that attempt. However something happened. It suddenly got sweeter and much more enjoyable. So I was wondering is it possible my bitter taste could have been down to loose packing at the top and essentially I was just burning ash?

Also I finished up amd cleared the pipe. There was still a good bit of tobacco left. So how do I know I'm done?

Matches are the best option, for me, as well. Lighter is more comfortable to use outdoors.

It's difficult to learn how to smoke a pipe in your first attemp,...IMHO you have to find the rhythm to smoking,...I breath 2, 3 times after taking the smoke of the pipe,...
The taste of the smoke depends on the tobacco, may be your choice is bitter than you like

I did think maybe I was going a bit quick so I decided after I had let the pipe cool down and done some stuff to give it another try today.
I packed a bit tighter and lit it. Let it char and then tamped and relit. It tasted much better nice and sweet, as it was described. I also decided i would take it slow so after a draw i took a littel toddle round the garden, had a draw, another wander. It was infinately better.

I have decided to stick with this tobacco until I get a more consitent smoke, I figure that's better than trying to judge improvements with more than one flavour.

Sounds like you have the right mindset.

As you figured out, pipes are best enjoyed slowly and there's nothing wrong with stopping if it starts to go wrong. Most people have at least one story of fighting through their first pipe and getting some bad tongue bite.

Don't limit yourself to one tobacco for too long. Flavors are all over the spectrum and you really just might not like the blend. I had the same mindset and it took me years to finally try something other than the beginner recommendation at the tobacconist. Turns out aromatics don't work with me and I still don't enjoy them much.

A JH is a "changed" MM... He usually changes the shank and stem but uses MM bowls...
