No pipe today....yet
However I am having a small issue. When lighting ky pipe Im getting a harsh taste which basically taints the flavour. Are there any common lighting errors I could be having that anyone is aware of?

When I do the charring or false light, I evenly light the entire top surface of the tobacco while drawing moderately. The tobacco expands quite a bit protruding up above the rim of the bowl. After the false light goes out, which time can vary, sometimes it goes out right away, and sometimes I get several puffs in before it goes out. After it goes out I lightly (very lightly) tamp the ash down evenly around the bowl and then re-light. Usually that re-light will last the rest of the bowl, or not, depending on the tobacco.
Also, since you are just starting using a lighter: is it a soft flame lighter? A torch lighter is too hot and might result in a harsh taste. And some pipe smokers claim that they can taste a difference when using butane to light their pipe as opposed to a wooden match. Just a few more things to consider.
We're scheduled to get about 4 inches of rain from Isaac. Very little precipitation as yet.
In the meantime, I'm relaxing with a bowl of Peterson "Special 2012 Reserve" in my Peterson Killarney "Bent Rhodesian."
