I have a question - what do you do with the turtle?

he said "extra snapping turtle shells"

so that means the turtle wasn't using it anyway

Not necessarily, it could just as well mean that these are the 'extra snapping' variety of turtle shells. It is unclear whether the 'extra' refers to the shells only (i.e. from the shell surplus depot where turtles presumably get them), or to the whole package including a snapping head.
Very disappointing for a pedantic turtle whisperer.

Do you mean like the extra pair of pants that go with your jacket?

    Soup.
Snappers are astounding. You tease them with
a broom handle and when they snap you lop their head
off with an ax. A half hour later it still wants to snap...

And they get big. The last one I caught in New Jersey
was eating all the bait out of the neighbors bait pond
and may have been +40 pounds.

As kids we alway had the old guy down the road
clean them. He got a third of the meat for the
effort... Better to eat cat fish I think....
