Thread: cowboy firearms

been thinking of getting in to some cowboy action shooting. heres a few of my guns. the rifle right above the single action revolvers is an original 1873 winchester in 44-40. the gun that won the west. any one shoot cowboy action. dave

The gun that won the west was in more likelihood to have been the double barrel shotgun. They were far more commonplace than the lever action when it came to the pioneers. They are far more versatile as a tool for hunting and defending than the rifle. I've always wanted to get into western action here myself. However it's much harder to own a pistol here and that is half the fun of western action right there. I will always regret the loss of my lever action back in the Governments paranoia days in 1996. A rifle I dearly loved, and next to my pump action shotgun (also stolen by the government) was my most used hunting tool.

By the way, that is a nice little collection you have for yourself. I admit to being envious.

I was amember of SASS for many years but got out of it. Things really changed and not for the better. However using the weapons is fun.

Those are some fine pieces of iron you have. It may sound funny ,but I've thought lately of selling my 9mm and getting a sixshooter instead. Firearms were just more classic back then...but that's only my opinion. I too am envious of ye !

beuatiful weapons...I retired as a Master Sniper (Not better just could put together shoting programs). I just built a 7Rem Mag withMcmillam stock, bipod and going with a LRT Leo scope and a match grade barrel. but to tell you the truth, my favorite weapons are my 1911 Colt .45 and my 357 lever Marlin....I too have been thinking about going back to the old school stuff....

I heard somewhere that if you 'can't do it in six, then what the hell makes you think you got a better chance with 15'... I suppose it's handy if you have more than six assailants though.

I joined SASS last year and have been practicing. I'm planning on shooting my first match this September (it's been over 100 degrees here lately, so I hope it cools off). Nice shooting irons you have their. I use a 12 gauge Stoeger coachgun, ruger vaqueros, & a marlin 1894 Cowboy (vaqueros & marlin are .357, but I load .38 for them).

What the hell makes me think I have a better chance with 15? Well, supposing that the "can't" is really a less than desirable probability... then I'd say that 15 is about (dry analysis here) a 250% increase in those less-than-desirable odds. Better to be a wanker carrying 15 then to be buried by six, as they say... (or maybe it's just me!)

How does the old saying go? Something like: it was Sharps that made the west safe for Winchester.

I've always been partial to all natural (steel & wood) firearms but CAS always looked like turning money into noise. Maybe if they moved the targets back a mite...
