I've no idea, as I've never dealt with them before; pipes or tobacco. I'm always wary of that much tobacco for that little, though.

I had thought about a nice corncobb, I may still get one, but settled on a nice looking briar for now.

I have never smoked a pipe and gave up cigs about 3 years ago. Those Erik Nording Freehand pipes look amazing to me. I am so tempted to purchase the "rustic signature."
I keep seeing so many posts on here about pipes and I would love to get more info. It seems so logical to shave, have a glass of bourbon and smoke a pipe!

Check your local tobacco shop or some online store for starter pipes. I wouldn't buy the cheapest unbranded pipe as there is a risk that it gives you poor experiences and drives you away from pipes forever. I would say that getting a pipe from local store is better than online, as you can see the size of the bowl.
You don't have to put your whole wallet on trying pipes either. As said, Peterson and Stanwell have excellent low budget pipes. You don't maybe get the finest briar there is but they smoke as well. New Stanwells aren't Danish any more but they are made in Italy (such a shame i think). In general, pipes made in Italy are ok.
I can't say about Savinellis because it's about 20 years since i had one. I've never tried corn pipes so i can't say about these either. There are more experienced members in this forum who surely can tell you about Savinellis and corns. eTom and JimmyHAD might give you excellent hints with such a collection of pipes they have.
Edit: Stay away from the eBay estate pipes as well. You never know what you get when buying used pipe without seeing and smelling it and there seems to be similar maniac shopping hysteria with pipes as there is with straight razors.Last edited by Sailor; 09-01-2010 at 08:48 AM.

I just got myself a Peterson pipe the other day, my first pipe, and a tin of Sunset Breeze which is a really great flavourful tobacco with a lovely aroma.
I'd definately recommend a Peterson, they're well made, well finished and mine smokes very nicely.

Other than a pipe and tobacco, is there anything else that is necessary to get started? Cleaners, Filters, one of those 3 in 1 pipe tools?

Stubear,
Which Peterson did you buy? I have nine of them and all a really good smokers.
I ran out of Sunset Breeze last week and just got in another tin last night. I will be loading a bowl when I get home from work.
I also bought a tin of Connoisseurs Choice and a tin of De Luxe Mixture. I tend to smoke a lot of aromatics in the summer. Can't wait to the fall and winter - the English blends come out!
For the original poster - I just bought a Savinelli Bing's Favorite last week. I paid $79.00. It has become by far my favorite evening pipe. It has the triangular blasa filter, which I was not sure if I would like - I do very much. It would be a great starter pipe.
BTW - don't forget to read about how to break in a pipe. I have seen many a bowl burned out by improper break in.
If you go to youtube, an Irish gentleman that goes by Dubinthedam has a lot of really good beginner videos there. From buying to loading to smoking to cleaning. It is how I started.
