There are two schools in this, but i clean my pipes every time i've used it.
There are those who let tobacco in the bowl and smoke it later, but IMO that affects too much of aroma. If i don't have time to smoke all there is then i don't smoke at all.

I usually smoke the bowl completely. If it is a latakia based tobacco I would normally smoke it all. A VA based tobacco that might tend to bite will mellow if you smoke a quarter of the bowl and leave it overnight IME. Burly or Latakia tend to get a bit rough if left in the bowl a day or two and then smoked.
I see no harm in leaving tobacco in the bowl if you intend to smoke it later. OTOH, if you're finished with the pipe and don't intend to smoke the remainder, if there is any, wait until it cools, knock it out and shove a pipe cleaner in the stem/shank until the next time.Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

Jimmy,
I agree completely with what you have stated here about leaving the different tobaccos in the bowl.
Latakias need to be finished or knocked out and Virginias mellow with some rest.
I try and gauge how much time I am going to have to smoke and pack my pipe accordingly.
I will say this. I have never been able to sit a cigar down and come back to it later without it tasting horrible. At its worst, I have never had a pipe taste like that.
