well...no other wood but briar. plenty of self respecting pipe makers use meerschaum to make some beautiful pipes, but meerschaum isnt wood. clay was also used for centuries but has fallen out of favor. personaly my favorite pipes in my collection are actually my corn cob pipes, but i havent tried a clay pipe yet. there are vendors for meerschaum carving kits, but as far as clay and corn cob pipes go they're so cheap makeing your own just doesn't make any sense.
