Thanked: 220I golf regularly in the summer, so I have a decent set of clubs. For a beginner though, I'd recommend a full, but cheap set to learn on. You might not like it, or you might damage the clubs learning, so there's no need for a brand new set of Pings! You might even be able to pick up a fairly good used set at a golf store, sometimes the pro's upgrade their clubs, even though the old ones were already good. Good luck on your game and remember that a big part of enjoying golf is being outdoors in the nice surroundings!

I agree with a cheap set to start. I've been golfing for 3 years, joined a league and love the game. I ordered my first set from gigagolf.com. I was e-fitted and they were really really inexpensive.
While playing I bought an older pair of mizuno mp-30's on ebay. They are heavier, stiffer and have no offset. Long story short - I forced myself to learn to hit these and love them. The other set I'm giving to my friend now.
My point, both ways I have paid very little for a set 3-pw.
I recommend putting the money into lessons, its the swing that counts.
If you like to try and figure it out on your own, I recommend Ben Hogan's Five Lessons and watch Sevam1 on youtube. Everything you need to know is in the book... well, except for the secret!
Good luck,
Brian

Bump....
Swmbo has introduced me to this game. Everyone keeps telling me I'm doing fantastic but I'm not sure if it's true or they are just trying to keep me from throwing my clubs into the trap. The nice thing is plenty of time to play here with the weather."We sleep soundly in our beds because rough men stand ready in the night to visit violence on those who would do us harm."

Thanked: 522I played in the 60s through the 80s. Then I got priced out of the game thanks to the venerable PGA. They didn't do me any favors price wise. The game went from $2 per round in the 60s to $40 per round in the 9's .. I'm out.
In the 70s I played everyday rain or shine to single digit handicap. Best round was a 68 on a par 70 course. Nowadays I might go to a driving range two times a year just to see if I still have the rhythmic swing I used to have.
I went to the Westchester Classic, the Philadelphia IVB Classic and the BC OPEN in Endicott NY back in the 70s on numerous occasions. I got to see the likes of Gene Sarazen, Sam Snead, Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, Dow Finsterwald, Julius Boros, Tom Wieskopf, Gary Player, Lee Trevino and many more of the great players of that time in history.
I also repaired and built golf clubs for about 25 years back then. Technology took me out of that hobby. Golf is a great character builder if you can afford it. I have long ago been priced out of the game but I still watch the tournaments on TV. WHY? Because the game is so good. I always reserve 4 days to watch the Masters Tournament.JERRY
