A Manly Muddler for the perfect drink
Having a wood shop I get all kinds of requests. I had a request for a muddler. That thing the bar keep uses to mull assorted things for ****tails. A manly muddler, large, tall for high ball glasses, something a bit more exotic. You cannot use most exotic woods for something like this. The oils in the wood are toxic and will leach out in your drink. We went with Birdseye Maple, I picked up a presentation grade hunk of turning stock. There is some exceptional figuring in the wood. For a bit of flair I put a Cocobolo top on the handle.
The handle portion is sculpted to fit the swell of one’s hand with a thumb and forefinger groove at the front along with a generous bead to keep you from knocking your knuckles into the glass top. The photos are dark, but you get the ideal. It has one coat of walnut oil on it but will be getting a couple more. Walnut oil is food safe and hardens nicely over a few days. It is almost 13 inches long from the business end to the top of the ball top.

Beautiful wood and nicely turned. You got one heck of a smooth finish on it. Did you use power sanding, sanding on the lathe or all by hand?
I've been learning to turn different things. I just finished my first practice bowl from a green piece of poplar from a tree I fell not too long ago. Not a great wood but it was very satisfying to get it fully turned without catches.

Very nice. The cocobolo tip is cool..
When I saw the title I thought it was going to be one of these but unless you flyfish it will seem odd.The white gleam of swords, not the black ink of books, clears doubts and uncertainties and bleak outlooks.
