    Default Greenbrier Resort (West Virginia)

If you are anywhere on the eastern part of the United States, I would highly recommend looking into this fabulous luxury resort. I just spent a wonderfully relaxing weekend there filled with golf, fine dining, excellent spirits and some great cigars as well. The accommodations have been recently remodeled and are totally first rate. I played some of the worst golf of my life but still enjoyed myself. We played the historic Old White Course and it was something to behold. The highlight of the weekend had to be sitting out on the patio behind the main guest quarters after diner enjoying a Johnnie Walker Blue and a Bolivar Belisco Fino with a couple a dear friends...an evening to remember!

The Greenbrier is great. I have been there a few times and really enjoyed it. I believe that the recent remodeling followed the sale of the property. It was formerly owned by CSX Railroad.

We have not been there for several years and based on your experience we need to go back soon. Thanks for the post.

They were in financial trouble not too long ago. I forget who bought it (a local concern I think) but they have done a great job as far as I can tell.
We actually spent one day at the Homested in Virginia on the way down, it is nice but not quite as lavish.

I thought the Greenbriar was owned by the US government, at least in part, as it was expanded to conceal a secret underground bunker where US statesmen were to be wished away incase of a nuclear launch? Anyway I would love to stay at a place with a little history to it especially if it's as nice as I hear. Glad to hear you enjoyed it.

Back in my college days when I was in to cave exploring we used to go down there on a regular basis. Of course we couldn't afford to stay in a posh resort like that. It was a campground and a tent for us.

It is a beautiful part of the country indeed.

Correct on the "underground bunker" concept but the Federal Government has never had any ownership (save for a lease agreement during World War II). Jim Justice, a West Virginia entrepreneur, bought it from CSX Corporation in 2009 and subsequently opened a casino and made many other upgrades to the facility. The "bunker" was decommissioned in 1992 and is now open to visitors. Sorry for boring history session.

Not at all, thank you!!! History is always an interesting topic, in fact it's one of the reasons I got into straights.

When I lived in DC I went a few times. The food there was outstanding.

I wonder if they still have the nuke bunker?
