This is great! I didn't know people still used them.I used to use the sealing wax for the ends of bagpipe drone reeds back in the 1970's.I remember thinking that's what it's for now that envelopes have been invented. The old Set of R.G.Lawries haven't been played for years now though.

i agree
get the pipes out and play. It's not fair to those that want to play and suck so bad to have those that can and don't hogging up all the talent.

Now why would I want to wax a seal. I thought they just kill them and take the skin with the fur on it. Maybe seal shave brushes?

Thanked: 23I used a flexible black wax when I sent out invitations for me wedding. I asked around and only one person said the seal had broken off during its travels.
Also, a seal strop sounds fascinating. I'm in!

Thanked: 480I used to haunt the antique shops, looking for old seals. It took a while, but I eventually found my initials.
I have used both commercial, and home made sealing waxes (never tried the glue sticks, great idea though!)
What I found was that temperature will play the greatest role in the wax sticking to the paper. When heated to near smoking temps, ordinary wax will actually seep into the course papers.
I have even gone as far as to heat the seal up in the hot wax ladle, and use it to melt the impression into a wax puddle that was allowed to sit to long on an envelope and harden.
I think we can all agree, that there is a certain level of class and elegance in hand written correspondence that can not be matched by the common methods of communication today,
I raise my hand blown goblet of natural honey wine in salute to you, my brother keepers of the olden (and most golden) of ways!
