Well, I have it, I read it, but it doesn't quite convince me. Also, the graphics are not my cup of tea. The movie was ... urgh.

And let's not shave and read at the same time shall we

Also part of my all-time favourites:
V for Vendetta (forget the movie please),
the Sin City series by Miller.
The Dark Night Returns by the same

I must also admit having had good laughs reading "Lobo's back's back". Pretty trashy but I thought it was fun.
Hah! I forgot all about Lobo. "Contract on Gawd" and "Paramilitary Christmas Special" are classics. Again, not exactly aimed at the pious mind...

Watchmen, League of Extraordinary Gentlemen - Alan Moore

    Hush (Batman) - Jeph Loeb

Batman: Year One, Batman: The Long Halloween - Frank Miller

The Iron Prometheus (Hellboy spinoff...pulp fiction) - Mike Mignola

    The Goon - Eric Powell

    Fables - Bill Willingham

I know you said you aren't much of a superhero guy, but i'd be remiss if i let these Batman classics get left out. They're much more real-world, non-kiddie, dark and gritty books. The Goon is just plain over the top, as is fables, but in a different way.

Also, i would suggest the series Chew, which is just starting to come out in TPB collections.

I'm also a fan of Frank Miller's work. I have box of graphic novels back at home but cant remember of the top of my head what I have there. V for Vendetta and Watchmen are a couple I've been wanting to get but havent yet.
Just for the record I have been collecting Batman since I was a kid and have every issue of Batman and Detective Comics since the early 80's

I completely blanked out Lobo, and a box of comics and such that should still be in storage at my folks place. As I recall I have most of the series, might still have a fair stack of appleseed in there too.

I can just see the look on my pregnant wife's face when I bring that back with me in December or she sees me reading any of it

Allright !! Thanks for that Jim ! I hadn't read those two you mention (only read Lobo's Back's Back and Death and Taxes.

See if I can find 'em anywhere ....

And don't worry, I haven't exactly got a pious mind

I came to think of another series I quite liked: Bone.
Very different from what's already been mentioned, verrrry cute.

I prefer them to Lobo's Back, actually. Completely and totally over the top--but so much fun!

As a die hard fan of the Sandman series (and Neil Gaiman in general), I have to recommend you to just about anything Mike Carey has written. Most notably, the Lucifer series. If you liked Sandman, you will definately like Lucifer. Hellblazer is a really big, long series, and sometimes it's not great, but it is always entertaining and a good read, and those moments when it's really on the mark are absolutely astonishing. The best place to start with Hellblazer is Dangerous Habits. That book gives the gist of what John Constantine is all about, and has some seriously funny/awesome moments. If you really like the funny/awesome, check out Garth Ennis. He's the man behind Preacher, as well as more recently The Boys. If you like stuff that's absolutely bizarre and funny and really inventive, Grant Morrison is great (check out The Filth). I also liked Y: The Last Man, and if you're looking for something that is still in print, check out The Unwritten by Mike Carey. The Walking Dead is really awesome too. If you like "hard boiled" crime stuff, 100 Bullets is great.

Really though, if you like Sandman, read Lucifer. It's my favourite comic series ever, beating out even Sandman. The characters, the plots, the settings, the payoffs...everything. It's just an absolutely stunning fantasy series.

I haven't read a TON of graphic novels, but from the ones I've read, I would say my must-reads are (and I know most of these have been mentioned already):
    Watchmen
    V for Vendetta
    Maus
    Cairo

I REALLY enjoyed these. Cairo isn't as popular, but it's definitely worth the read.

the Scott Pilgrim graphic novels are also very good, but they get pretty ridiculous, so if you want something that takes itself seriously then they aren't for you.

I just got into graphic novels a couple years ago and there are so so many I would love to read. I am pretty into Love and Rockets, especially Gilbert Hernandez. As far as series novels go I loved Y The Last Man, Sandman, and am currently on Echo by Terry Moore (incredible), The Walking Dead, and Ignition City (which is kind of steam punk and really well done). Pretty much anything by Warren Ellis (check out Fell - very dark but the art is incredible). My favourite one and dones are probably Asterios Polyp, The Alcoholic, or maybe DEMO which has some powerful stories. This hobby has gotten in the way of my RAD, which is a really good thing.
