Thanked: 150coffee roasting
So I picked up some green beans from Papua New Guinea and a pop corn popper, and I'm going to start roasting some beans once they arrive from the online supplier. I'm excited to try FRESH roasted coffee.
Anyone else do this?

I have tried this. There is going to be alot of smoke and alot of chaff flying around. I didn't have much success with this method. I eventually bought a roaster. Which reminds me, I need to replace my roaster. ( THey last about 2 years if you roast every other day)

Controlling the process is the difficult part. My first machine was an I Roast and they seemed to come out black every time. If you enjoy doing it and the quality of the coffee it pays to buy a quality machine built for the purpose.

I roast. Going on 4 years now.
My first roaster was a heat gun, Dog bowl and a wooded spoon.
Next cam the wirlypop over gas stove.
I now have a hottop roaster.
It does take a bit of work to get any kind of consistency but I have really enjoyed the ride. Of course SHMBO now does not like getting coffee out and has stated she wont be drinking any more of "that grocery store crap" so I have to make sure I keep up or get some from one of the local roasters.
Cannonfodder and I have the same screen names at home-barista.com
No offense was meant to any one who likes coffee purchased from a grocery store.Last edited by TeMpTiN; 01-09-2011 at 01:43 AM. Reason: Typo

I use the Behmor 1600 weekly, once you start roasting your own coffee you'll never go back. Enjoy!

Brewing Method
How are you roasters making your coffee? IMO, there is no better roast than esspreso and the ultimate machines are made by Gagia. There is a learning curve to get the grind just right and to compress them correctly to achieve a beautiful crema. Mmmmmmmmm.
I really have to limit myself or I don't sleep good, but one or two double shots a day is all I need. I never roasted, but appreciate when able to get the beans roasted locally daily. A huge difference.
I have tasted other peoples who roast themselves, but none of them are doing esspreso, but still very good stuff. Good luck.

Been roasting for years. I have a well used HotTop. I have used the popper before. Air roasts run fast and the coffee is a bit more lively and acidic than a drum roaster. The Quest M3 is another good roaster. We have a home roasting forum on home-barista.com with more information than you could shake a stick at http://www.home-barista.com/home-roasting/
Sweet Marias also has lot of good getting started information not to mention some top quality greens.
