Ice fishing and total lonliness.
This forum is about the "finer things in life", and for me the wild nature far away from everyday life one of those finest things life can give.
My girlfriend and myself has a small cabin up in the Norwegian mountains in a county called Oppland. The cabin is 10 miles away from the nearest public road, and there nothing else around expept wild and lonely forests and small lakes. We brought some fishing gear, a lot of wine, cognac, Cuban cigars and good food and just enjoyed life in the total silence.
The fish I wanted is called Røye in Norwegian, and Arctic Char in English I think. The only footsteps on the lake was my own, and I spent some fabolous time for myself ice fishing. The taste of this fish is heavenly, and paired with a Laurent Tribut Beuroy 2002 Chablis it was just fantastic.
The weather was perfect, and we had a great weekend. And I shaved with a Thiers-Issard Historic Snakewood 6/8 all three mornings We will be back in a short time, can`t wait actually!

Lucky guy!
There is something about winter silence I love, and I miss it here in Tennessee.

Thanked: 335I'm wondering why we say ice fishing for winter time fishing, but do not say water fishing for summer time fishing. Or is it that the winter fishers are really trying to catch ice?

That sounds great, Ama! Your arctic char are what we call brook trout, or "specs" in the Smoky Mountains where I fish for them. They are a relic of the Ice Age's push into the South. Of course ours swim in small freestone streams, and are much smaller, as seen here:
A 10-inch "brookie" is a trophy, anything approaching 15 inches is a once-in-a-lifetime catch, and we rarely harvest them, as they are still recovering from nearly being exterminated by logging and development. But they are exquisitely beautiful, especially during the spawn. I too love to get away to wild places to fish and enjoy the natural world. I bet Norway is a beautiful country. Thanks for sharing. AaronThere are many roads to sharp.

Thanked: 1371Beautiful place! It reminds me of fishing in the Superior National Forest here.
(though the Superior Forest is a bit less hilly, and I've never seen an attractive cigar smoking lady there)

They look alot like our brookies for sure, with the white color on the edge of the fins. Kinda keeping it oldschool there homeslice with the hand auger, kinda fits in with the simplicity of the straight!!! Nice touch. Hard water fishing is the best!!! Thanks for the pics.

Thanked: 995I was just in northern Finland last month. There is nothing quite like -30 temps and the silence of the forest covered in snow to calm the soul.
