Thanked: 2027Russia is an amazing country,we Ukes were known as white russians, the Molokans (means milk drinkers) were severly treated by the orthodox Russians, even today in America the orthodox will have nothing to do with the Molokans.
An Uncle of mine has my Great grandfathers riding boots and sword, things of beauty.
One family treasure I do have that my grandfather made, maybe 90 yrs ago, they called them Shimparya (sp)
They are mandatory when cooking Shashlik, about 3 ft long, are skewers for the meat.

Thanked: 1160That's pretty cool. Those skewers need some meat on them I would say. Sorry to hear about the religeous strife between your groups. Not all Orthodox are like that though. Live and let live. I like the Ukranians just fine. Even the Old Believers had troubles and got persicuted. Don't think the good Lord wanted it that way though. Time to make good friends.

Thanked: 2027The life was good, a high point as strange as it may seem was the funerals,a three day affair, lots of great Uke food., a parade up up Russian hill from the church, the last one I attended was for baboonishika, my grandmother, all the kids had to kiss her lips (that was not a fun thing)
If you ever get to to San francisco,go to colma,a small town a few miles away, our Russian/ukranian cemetary is there
Thats where my people are, look at the headstones, are pictures of the people that lay benieth those stones, you see Daniloff, luscotoff, those are my family, any NBA fans,Jumpin Jim Luscotoff is my cousin,

Thanked: 1160Maybe it's just me...but it has seemed to me that Slavic people are equally as passionate about their sadness as they are their happiness. Don't know if that makes sense or not but I find it very interesting.
