    Default Cleaning an old stein?

This site has proven to be enlightening and helpful on a number of topics, so I figured I would take a shot...

I have an old beer stein from Frankfurt - circa 1947 - and it has quite a bit of tarnish on the lid. I believe that this is pewter. There is also some grime on the glaze. Does anyone know if what I can clean the glazed ceramic with? Will dishwashing soap leave the metal unharmed? Also - will metal polish do any damage to the glaze? Thanks for any tips, advice, or info.

If the glaze is in good shape you can use just about anything. The glaze will protect it. If it's worn that's another story. I would start with gentle meaning dish soap and a soft brush and go from there. For the pewter they have polishes strictly for the stuff. Some of the all purpose metal polishes don't work on pewter.
