Growing up in rural north Alabama, I had six uncles who were all hunters. You could not walk for the blueticks, red bones and black and tans hounds. One uncles raised beagles for rabbit dogs and another pointers for quail. A neighber whose name was Walker had walker fox dogs. Many a night as a small boy i laid in bed and listened to the fox hounds on the run thru the hills and hollers. Someone always had a Fiest squrrils.

My brother in law currently raises Mountain Curs for coon hunting.

I don't even own a dog, but i enjoyed them in my youth.

I remember reading in a book by Robert Ruark, 'The old mans' boy grows older" that coon huntin is a special kind of madness !!

I've had beagles in the past. I enjoyed them and hunting with them, but they're a lot of work. I'm away from the house too much for them these days. I mostly just hunt deer, turkeys, bear, and waterfowl anymore, but I occasionally still go for small game.

The powers that see to our best interests and keep us safe from ourselves here in Cali, just made hunting with hounds illegal. Sad. MANY years ago I used to go running hounds with a friend who had some, mostly Walkers and a blue tic and a generic hound thrown in for good measure. Had a blast running coon and bear. I only got in on a few bear runs, I tell you what, ya gotta be in shape to do any of that stuff, the dogs don't slow up so you can catch up. We treed a Mountain Lion once when looking for bobcat. We couldn't shoot it, but I don't know of any laws about throwing snow balls!! Lots of great memories with the hounds!! Even when they run trash and it takes till noon the next day to round up the stragglers!!
