Thanked: 983Barbers in Oz
It was with great pleasure that I heard on the news tonight, that Barbering is having a resurgance in Australia. News footage showed men not only getting haircuts, but also getting shaved in traditional fashion, albeit, with a disposable bladed style of cut-throat razor. The fact remains that a bloke may soon be able to go to a barbers once again, and have a mostly male domain to chew the fat and get a haircut.
The Barber shop on this news segment had the manager/owner? stating that the men can come in just sit down and have a coffee or a beer and conversation if that was all that they wanted. A real bastion of manliness seems to be making a resurgence in this country and I for one, am pleased to hear it.

Mick,
I agree, however I saddled up for a chat and a shave with an old school bloke in Rocklea who has been doing this for eons and it was by far the worst shave I have ever had. Nasty stuff.

Thanked: 983Bugger it Stu, and I was starting to get all excited about it. Ah well, guess I'll continue to cut my own hair and shave myself for a while longer yet.

Mick,
Not trying to discourage you, more just commenting that guys like this aren't doing the straight razor re-emergance any favours. I would love to fine a place to go and have a straight razor shave every so often. The search continues.

Come to Perth WA, there is an old block in South Perth, he appeared on collectors a couple of years ago, does a great shave with a proper straight, seemed a little bemused when I asked him for a few tips. He sits you in a century old barbers chair, bloody uncomfortable !!
Cheers

Thanked: 0There used to be a place in Anzac Square in Brisbane years ago. I always wanted to go in and try it, but alas never did, and now unfortunately it seems to have disappeared.
I wanted to have a shave done by a professional so that I knew what it should feel like when I eventually got around to buying my own.
Ten years later and I finally have the razor, but still have never had a straight razor shave.

Thanked: 10That is good to hear.
When I was a little fellow, there used to be a barber in the shopping strip and I know he used to do shaves because I recall him stropping a razor when I was waiting with grandpa one day. This was in Melbourne, early 80's.
I'd reckon he'd have done a good one, but he'd be long retired by now.
I have had a very, very good shave in town here in Japan. Goodly sized barber shop, and mine was done by a fellow younger than I. I got the full treatment, he only left my eyebrows in place (but trimmed neatly) and it was fantastic. Smooth, comfortable and quite fast if I recall. Got that done when I was getting the wedding photos done here (but not during the wedding, just dressed up in a kimono, both of us) and I think that maybe I should go back and see what I can pick up.
Pretty sure it's a standard thing they learn here, why not everywhere? Heck, that's what the barber is, shaves and haircuts without any fluff, right?

I've been hearing the radio ad's for straight razor shaves at a chain of barber shops here in Brisvegas, however apparently the one around the corner from my wifes work (at Oxley) doesn't do them.
I went into a barber shop at Redbank Plaza and they do them there.
The only thing that concerns me is that the young bloke doing the barbering looks like he's been shaving for two years and cut himself both times....hehehe
He seems like a nice bloke and when I told him I'd just started using a straight he got as excited as a dog with two tails.
Anyway, if he couldn't do the job he wouldn't be there, eh.
I'm going to go in there next time I get a haircut and try it out.
